Arrow Which sealant for head bolts?

What sealer does everyone use on the LS1 head bolts? Do they all go in a water jacket? Which ones need the sealant?
Thanks

LS1 Head bolts do not require sealant.

All of the LS1 head bolts are blind tapped. Make sure you blow any water/oil out of the bolt holes before bolting the heads on because it will crack the block.

My bad, I was thinking about the head bolts on my stang then......

and yeah I blew everything out....I stripped the block bare, cleaned in every hole with a steam cleaner (HOT pressure washer) and blew out with compressed air.

Dont feel bad LT1 motors used sealant too, I used Black RTV with great success but like said, blind holes, completely clean them out, double check if needed.

Some bolts come with Antiseeze or some thin lube if be it from ARP to ensure a proper TQ rating when using a TQ wrench. What people are talking about is fluid from coolant or debris from gasket that doesnt really compress and since there is no room to go, the block cracks.

You do not need any RTV goop.

If they are stock GM bolts, they are tightened to a specific rotation angle and therefore are installed without any lube or sealant.

ARP's are the way to go. You can use them over again. Stock bolts one time. ARP does use oil or ARP lube.

Well I don't plan on tearing it down anytime soon or ever want to touch this thing again once it's all together. If it was mine I would ARP everything like I did to my forged 408 stroker for the stang but it's a friends soooo I'm using stock bolts.

make sure you use the proper torque on the arps. They stockers are torque to yield bolts.

Just to throw this out there. Sometime if heads are ported you do need sealant on the rocker bolts as they can protrude. You can also cut them so they don't protrude.

These guys are referring to the head to block bolts. You are speaking of the rocker arm bolts. LS2 GM bolts call for 22 foot lbs then turn 90 degrees and an additional 70 degrees in sequence. Not sure if some of the early LS1's with the staggered bolt lengths use these figures tho. If using the torque angle method be sure to mark a line on all the bolts after torque values are reached. This allows visual tracking of what bolts you did and did not rotate.

I know, I was pointing out the rocker arm bolts sometimes need sealant.
