Default first start after H/C install and no oil pressure...

After having the car apart for over 3 months, I finally cranked up the car (98 t/a) after installing a new cam, ported heads, new oil pump, etc and there was no leaks or anything but after waiting the 5 longest seconds of my life the oil pressure gauge was still at the bottom of the gauge. please help!

Idk if this means anything but after both cranking the engine with the fuel pump fuse/ignition fuse removed and with the fuse in place the gauge went up once the car was shut off/keys removed.

Also its about 10 degrees outside and everything sounds and looks fine otherwise.

Have you tried it again? Has the gauge risen at all?

Did you use a new pickup o-ring when you put it all back together?

Are you sure you didn't break your oil pressure sender right behind your intake manifold? Could have bumped it while reinstalling intake.

Its one of two things, oil pump o ring (not on right or its crushed) or the oil pressure sending unit.

I agree, do a search on technique to guarantee perfect install for o-ring

Good luck man. Hopefully it's just the oil pressure switch.

Update: So after taking off the oil filter and cranking the engine w/o the fuel, there was absolutely no change in oil drainage/dripage or spraying. I got to the oil pump and dissembled the pump. All the parts looked good despite not much noticeable porting work being done to it (it was a TSP ls6 ported pump).

This time I packed the pump with grease and reassembled it. The 0-ring I previously used didnt fit as snug as the new blue ring I got from GM. The old one was brown and thicker. The back of the pickup tube was covered in oil even with the pan being dropped a bit. Also, I blew compressed air into the tube to check for obstructions and the oil bubbled a lot.

Im going to fire it back up this week once I get some threaded rod to push the pulley back on. I hope all this was was the o-ring and/or lack of prime *fingers crossed*

Let us know what happened. I had the same problem and never found the problem since motor blew a rod. Thanks.

Finished reassembling the engine tonight and it took about a good 7 sec of cranking the engine w/ the fuel fuse pulled to build pressure but boy did it build!

Upon start up it was about 70 psi and after letting it run for a few minutes it dropped to a sustainable 60 psi. Drove it 15 min home keeping the rpms bellow 2000 and it stayed at 60 during idle the whole time. Before I tore it down, the pressure was 40 psi during idle while hot.

Changed the oil when I got home and now I just have to save up a bit of $ to get it tuned by Straightline. Feels good

I've pulled down quite a few LS1s and I know exactly how you feel. The <10 seconds it takes to prime seems like a lifetime.

It will be pretty high like that for awhile until you get some miles on the car.

Man I'm going through the same exact thing. I just finished the heads/cam an hour ago and my oil pressure is very low at idle, usually around 10 psi but has dropped as low as 6 psi. It builds pressure up to 40 psi when I rev the motor a little. Sounds like that o-ring, lot of work just for that little ring. BTW, I also purchased a TSP ported LS6 oil pump, and also installed that same blue o-ring you described.

It should be more like 40 psi @ idle. If its not the sender unit near the back of the intake like the guys mentioned in the post, then its probably your o-ring.

I gouged a chunk out of an o-ring trying to fit it in the first time too.
