Default TR CheaTR package vs GT2-3 and Patriot LS6 heads

Was looking for some help in selecting a setup...

Im just looking for something stock or NEAR stock sounding, smooth idle. Just want a decent power gain, and a little more revs. Im in California, and while I dont want to put an emphasis on passing smog, it wouldnt be a bad thing. And decent gas mileage is a must as well.

With that said, im currently looking at either the TR CheaTR package (214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA), or the Patriot LS6(2.02" Intake, 1.57" Exhaust, 64cc) heads with the GT2-3 cam (207/220 .571/.578 118.5)

The TR package is around $800 more, and I am on as much of a budget as possible, but so far those are the options im looking at. Any tips or advice? Or other directions someone would recommend? What gains could I expect from either package?

Looking ahead down the road, there is a SLIGHT possibility of going FI, so id want to keep the setup fairly friendly in that regard as well. Again, its not a solid plan, but more wanting to keep my options open.

I used to have a GT2-3 cam. Nobody will ever be able to tell you have a cam, it sounds just like a stocker.

I made around 400 rwhp with LS6 heads, long tubes with cats, and Corsa catback. Ran 12.3 and still could get great gas mileage if that matters. This was all in my heavy *** GTO, so an F-Body should see better gains.

Thanks for the replies so far! Ive heard nothing but good things about either cam, so I guess its mostly preference.

I figure ive decided on going with the Patriot heads, because since im on a budget, the 800 im saving can cover a large portion of the rest of the stuff im going to need (oil pump, lifters, timing chain, gaskets, bolts, etc.) So its basically down to which cam im going to go with.

Any more opinions on the cheaTR vs the GT2-3 matching up with the Patriot heads? Or perhaps the newly released cheaTR v.3 might be an option as well?

i was considering the cheaTR cam package but when i talked with one of Thunder's people they asked my exhaust set-up currently and in the near future and when i told them 3" true duals they said this cam isn't for you lol they told me more about the reverse split cam i already was considering and now thats installed lol TR227/224 package, it should pass smog also. i know what you mean about the other stuff you need, i installed all of it at once with new 241 heads since i had crappy 853's with valve float. LS7 liters, LS2 Lifter Trays, LS2 timing chain, Oil Pump, U/D pulley, new gaskets . . . i'd recommend new bolts on as many things as you can afford to, you don't want to break a bolt off because it's old and not in the best condition

I could also suggest one of our newer CheaTR designs, the V3 219/230 .607"/.604" 117 with a set of the Patriot LS6 heads with 59 cc chambers. I could work you a killer budget package which will easily meet your goals.

Thanks,
Shane

One of the original test cars for the CheaTR is an 04 Vette A4. With a set of ETP215's that car routinely knocks down 28MPG hwy. I've never seen anyone complain about mileage with a CheaTR package. Stock idle and MAP values with 100RWHP gain... but I guess if you keep your foot in it, you'll see poor mileage everytime...

The 59cc heads wont bump compression too high? Im stuck on 91 octane here in california, and id like to keep the setup somewhat FI friendly should i build upon it later. Thanks for the replies so far though!

Well, the 59cc chambers would be fine on motor with a good tune but I wouldn't recommend them for a F/I setup. We'd want to drop compression a bit or at least stay stock. Just keep in mind, you will give up a good 20HP between 10:1 and 11:1

Thanks,
Shane

I was thinking about maybe upping it to 10.5 to 1 with the 64cc heads, and then I can use a thicker gasket if I do end up going FI in the future to bring it back down to closer to stock levels... Or is that a crazy plan? I mean the FI thing is probably a LONG shot at best, and Im probably better off just going on motor, and if down the road I go FI, I can sell my setup and start again.

How does the cheaTR cam do with boost? Oh and what gains have you guys noticed with the new V.3 over the original cheaTR if any?

Just another question on this... what kind of valvetrain life can I expect with either the cheaTR or gt2-3? LPE says you can stick with LS6 springs with the GT2-3, so I would guess its quite easy on the springs. What about with the cheaTR?

And just to ask again, what kind of gains or differences have been shown with the original cheaTR and the V.3?

Do the heads right for this setup and pick up some used 317's when you go F/I. I have seen some 317's go for $300.

The v3 should net you about 10-15 more hp over the original CheaTR camshaft. The v3 will be a little bit easier on the valvetrain as well. PM, email, or give me a call at the shop and I can work you up something on a good/budget head & cam combo.
