If you want them right you have to measure them, no magic formulas.

.050 - .065 is a good target

Too much preload and the valves will hang open and not seal. Best by is go to zero lash then you should have between a minimum 3/4- max 1 1/4 turn til tight. If too many turns til tight you need shorter pushrod, less turn you need longer ones

What they said. Anyway, I'm from the Des Moines area too. We talked once at the Kum and Go on 8th if I remember correctly. Need any help with anything let me know. I have plenty of friends from around the area that would be willing to help out as well.

this is my situation, i have a length checker, its basically an adjustable pushrod to figure out length, what i was told is to adjust that out to zero lash after i get my heads, cam, lifters, all put in, then add the preload of the lifters to that number to figure out the length i need. for example if i get 7.275 at zero lash and the preload is .100 then i will need a 7.375 rod.

Correct.

Here is a link to a chart that contains the lifter preload by GM part number. Link

.100 is too much. Ask any of the builders on here and you will see that .050-.065 is a pretty common target for a stable and quiet setup.
