Default Zero Oil Pressure

Today my oil pressure dropped to zero in my 98 Ls1. I'm pretty sure I need a new oil pump, my question is what should I get? I read on here that a high volume unit can suck the pan dry at higher rpms. Is this true? I found a brand new Ls6 oil pump, will this work? Thanks in advance for the help

Does the car have oil? Maybe your oil sending unit went out. Its behind the intake on the right hand side. How many miles on the car?

if your oil sending unit went out, it would usually jump to 80psi, but a good idea to check it

Pre-2000 LS1's are notoriuos for the oil pump to quit working with no warning!!!! The oil pump from TSP would be a good choice...

Thanks for the quick responses. I have an aftermarket gauge that uses an oil tube so I know the oil pressure dropped. People have been saying I'm going to need new main and rod bearings. Is this really necessary? How about a Melling unit? Something like this

TSP ported LS6 pump here, no problems at about 16K miles so far.

Yea we didn't. Before it dropped to zero it fell to about 7 and started running poorly. 7 psi of oil pressure is low but its enough to prevent damage. Once it reached zero we immediately cut it. It ran at zero for less then 2-3 seconds which doesn't seem like enough time to do any damage. Hopefully we're right

i have the melling 10296. if you plan on doin any modding like a cam or heads i would go with the melling or ported ls6 from Texas. And you would have to be pretty low on oil to suck the pan dry, someone correct if im wrong but im almost positive the LS1/Ls6 can only consume about 3 quarts before it cycled back through the filter and pan. So your only sucking it dry if your down 2-2.5 quarts.

Also, anybody have a part number for the bolt that attaches the oil pickup to the pump? I'd like to replace that while I'm in there.
