Default LS2 timing chain on LS1

While doing my H/C package I'm going to put on an LS2 timing set up. Does this just bolt on or do I have to change out my balancer or anything to make the chain fit?

The sponser Yank sells them, as well as SDPC and TSP, Thunder Racing.

I paid $27.00 for a LS2 chain at a Chevy dealership. I beleive that the LS2 chain has superseded the LS1 chain. It is much heavier duty when compared to the old LS1 chain.

Yank was also selling adjustable single roller LS2 timing sets last summer - not sure if they still are.

question on these chains.... just how long are they good for? Over at the Corvette forum here is a LS2 chain with 16-18K miles and look at the slack!

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-begins-4.html

makes me wonder why this one did not hold up better.

That amount of slack doesn't look out of the ordinary to me. These chains have a little slack in them even when brand new.

GM designs their engines with a 200,000+ mile life span. When you consider how many of these LS series engines are out there in service with tons of miles on them it is obviously a durable part ... F body cars and Corvettes are just the tip of the iceberg ... think about how many trucks and SUVs are using these engines ... I see Silverados in our service department all the time with over 200,000 miles on them...they may be on their second or third transmission but the engines are still performing great. I have put 60,000 one LS2 chain and then did another head and cam change and have 77,000 miles on the one in the car now. It is a quality part with great durability.

ok so that much slack is considered normal. Will this not retard the cam and valve timing enough to change engine performance?

Maybe. As mentioned, the slack doesn't look too bad. The question is, how much space did it have to begin with & was the cam degreed w/ the chain in tension?

I wonder if this much chain slack can cause it to break.

Depends on how the cam gears look. I did a cam swap on my 98 and it had 100K miles on it and the gear's looked fine so I just tossed a LS2 chain on it and rocked it. It will take a special puller to get the gear off the crank also so be prepared for that.

I have this issue when I installed a brand new LS2 timing set. I got the cam gear dot to line up with the crank gear dot. I torqued the bolts on the cam. Now when I move the crank shaft either way there is slack and makes the dots not line up. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?
