Default 98 LS1 Rebuild Prices

I have a 98 LS1 that just crossed the 125k mile mark. She still pulls and runs like a champ but within the next year or two I'd like to start putting a few parts together to get it around 400rwhp. At that same time I'd like to get the motor rebuilt, gaskets replaced, etc. She drips a small bit of oil now and burns about 1/2 a quart every 1500miles and of course piston slaps on startup.

What is involve in a usual LS1 rebuild and what prices have you guys seen? I am assuming main bearings, piston rings, and gaskets all get replaced.

Thanks

well labor is labor and varies from shop to shop. but rebuild kits go for around 600. but thats from summit with pistons i'm sure there are cheaper out there and probably ones with out pistons.

i plan on rebuilding mine when i do my build up. along with a h/c/i.

mine has 106k and im redoing mine as well. i have found many kits available. summit makes a rebuild kit with stock pistons, bearings , gaskets, and what not for around 650 bucks. theres a few kits on ebay as well. there are a few specialty parts for the block itself, the oil passage dumbbell and metric plugs that are available from scoggins dickey.

Hadn't even seen the Summit Kit before thanks for the info on that guys. I took the 302 apart but I will probably get this thing rebuilt at a shop just because I'd like to get alot of the rebuild done at once. Aside from the kit, what machine work would be done? Just honing the cylinders?

From what I've seen and read I'd stay away from the summit kits, the pistons are almost always heavier than stock.

Find some low mileage stock pistons and re-ring kit. ARP bolts for the rods, mains, turn the crank and have your machine shop balance it all with new bearings (crank, cam, whatever your shop recommends)Should not be very expensive, basically talk to your machine shop, I know my guy beats summit prices and can get the parts just as fast. The gasket kit from summit isn't bad though.

Haven't gotten that far yet. My goal is a nice street able and reliable 400rwhp.

I wouldnt go with a summit kit for performance, id really suggest you consider going with a set of forged rods and pistons. The crank is good to over 700hp but if you just put some decent rods and pistons you have alot of room to grow.

that kit actually had some good stuff. except for the fel-pro head gaskets. those pistons are supposed to be a dead stock replacement. from what ive read it is a gm piston reboxed. a few guys on here have used them. chevy high performance magazine did a 383 LS1 build with them as well. that kit is really worth looking at.

well pretty much any h/c/i set up will get u there.

i would say get the motor out, on the stand, and torn down as your first step. ls1's are not hard to rebuild. no harder than any other push rod small block.

so since your goal is 400rwhp i would only replace pistons/rods if necessary. unless u think your gonna get a wild hair up your *** and decide to boost your car in the future.

I'd like to freshen up some of the internals just so they are brand new again especially since I want to throw a little bit more power at it. I think 400rwhp is plenty especially because I want to still enjoy my 27mpg on the highway. I am more than capable to tear the thing down myself but machine work would I be looking at?

I plan to get an LS6 intake and another head/cam combo. So will buying an entire new block actually be cheaper than getting my LS1 freshened up?

I'm all for swapping in an LS6 if its going to be a better way to go with my $.

Thats not bad at all. I was reading on here for an A4 with just a mild cam making over 400rhwp with an LS6 longblock, bolt ons, and long tubes. This is probably the way I am going to go. I'll get the trans rebuilt and do the whole swap myself. Just gotta start saving now Thanks guys!
