Default ls1/ls6 block head bolts

I have a 2002 trans am, and I'm not sure if it came factory with an ls1 block, or ls6 block. either way, I'm going to put ls6 heads on the motor and I need to know if the head bolts were different between the two. What's the best way to tell? Or, does anyone just know off hand?

Thanks!

SDPC sells two different head bolt kits

1997-2003 kit (10 long and 5 short) (The site says this includes Corvettes)

2004+ (all 15 bolts are short)

If this is correct, then you shouldn't have to worry either way. The first kit should work. Someone correct me if this is incorrect.

all pre 04 blocks had the different length head bolts.
all 04+ had the ones that were the same length. regardless of LS1/6/5.3/4.8...etc

So if my block were an ls6 I would have to get a different set of headbolts? How do I tell what block I have?

all you have to do is know what year you have. 04+ had all bolts the same length.

if your uncertian, you will find out when you pull the heads.

Well, I know it's not going to be an 04+. the car's an 02. I was just hoping to find out if I needed different bolts before I pull the motor so I can have everything purchased and ready go to before I ever start haha.

No real way to tell by looking at it. If you pull a bolt on the outside of the block you can tell pretty quick what year it is. If the bolt is 6" it is the pre '04 (long and short) bolts and if it is about 4" then it is the post '04 (all short) bolts.

We have both sets in stock in both GM and ARP. Let us know which one you need and we'll get you fixed up!

Well it's the factory block and it's in an 02 so I know it's pre 04, I was just unsure if the head bolt for the ls1 and ls6 blocks were different in 2002 some people say they are diff, and some people say they are the same. I just don't know what bolts I'll need.

this is the determining factor ^^^^, i have a gm warranty replacement in my car, its the ls6 casting, but somehow i got an 04+ block and i always have to remember that. i ended up ordering 2 set of head-studs because i thought there was no way i could have the 04+ block. i should have checked first

Default 02 block 04 heads

I think I know the answer but want to be sure. If I have an 02 block and 04 LS6 heads which head bolts do I use?

Not to open a thread just to make a negative statement but the 04 and up had all long bolts and the pre 04 had long and short. Just want to make sure people get the right info. Thanks

No, you're incorrect.

TSP was correct, they were all short. Not long.

IF you would like I could take a picture of both early and late for you, I have a set of both. Early has 4 short and 16 long not counting the little one at the top that didn't change between year. The 04 and up are all long you can look up head studs on any website and it will show you.
