Default 122K LS1 Cam on stock lifters?

Hi All,

I have researched and seem to have found plenty of examples of high mileage H/C ls1’s however I have not seen too many high mileage cam only on stock lifters….

What do you all think? I would like to keep the price down and not pull the heads off. Do you think the average well maintained LS1 with over 120K on it will handle a moderate to mild cam on the stock lifters? Since my oil pan is leaking a little oil, I might change out the rod bolts while I change the gasket as well….

I plan to change all the other standard items, pushrods, springs, oil pump, timing chain.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks,

I think it would be a very good idea to spend the little extra money and time while you are doing the work now rather then having to go back and do it all in a couple thousand miles after your cam swap. Remember those lifters have 122,000 miles on them and they are over 11 years old.

With that many miles I would highly suggest changing out to a fresh set of lifters.

intersting thread, just put a torquer2 cam in a 100K car with stock lifters still due to not pulling the heads. Im pretty curious to see if there are alot of others out there who have done this. guess we'll see how it goes.

i would suggest the following for any cam swap for good measure, smooth operation, confidence in your new found power:

LS2 Timing Chain
compcams lifters or LS7 lifters
valve spring upgrade to match your cam
Oil pump, more flow higher pressure (i.e LS6 ported)
pushrods!!!! to match your cam

i feel these are all highly recommended items when going up on a cam, and if you got the money swap the heads while you got them off to change the lifters. and if you do that might as well go full roller too but i would change those 5 things if you plan on beating on you motor....and if you say you wont then you are a LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, this is not what I wanted to hear but thanks guys.... I am now thinking I will save a little more for a set of heads or look for a good deal on some used 243's if I'm pulling off the stockers anyway for the lifters.... I assume I should go with new lifter trays as well…

This brings up another question. If I find a set of 243's on ebay what years are the bolt patterns different? Will any year bolt up to my 1999 ls1 block?

yeah i believe any 243 head will bolt right on a 99 block. i think the only difference was on pre 99 heads the valve covers were peremiter bolts and not the center bolt like you have.

correct me if im wrong guys!

good luck and lemme know how it comes out

Thanks again everyone, I am thinking I will most keep a look out for a deal on a set of used 243's and get a custom cam or just get a TSP 5.3 Torquer combo....
