Default Drop the motor for cam swap & all supporting mods?

I tried searching.

I'm wondering if I'm better off dropping the motor to install all of the following:

Intake Manifold, Fuel Rail, Injectors
Cam, Oil Pump, Timing Chain, Underdrive Pulley
Springs, Pushrods, Spark Plugs, Wires
Clutch, Rear Main Seal

Thanks, in advance

I know it would sure help when doing the oil pump and timing chain since you have to drop the oil pan and it's a real job to drop that with the k-member in the way.

It would also allow you to flip the motor upside down so you don't have to worry about the lifters falling.

And it would make it easier to install the valve springs since you don't have to reach back under the cowl.

But then you have to factor in the amount of time it takes to yank the motor out.

Thanks! Any idea how long it takes to drop the motor?

Oh, I'm also doing a clutch and rear main seal

I would say it would be worth it. I am doing heads/cam/exhaust, rebuilt the trans/new clutch so it was definately worth it for me. Are you doing long tubes too?

Since your doing a rear main I would drop the motor just for the simple fact of the ease of being able to get to everything with it out.

Of course this is if you have the extra time and have something else to drive while the camaro is down.

If I was doing it, even though ive never pulled an LS motor out before thats what I would do (I have a second car as well).

I have no clue how long it takes to pull it out, but with the ease of being able to get to everything would make it worthwhile to me !

I pulled mine out from the bottom in about 4 hours goofing off. Its not bad but figure at least 8 hours removing/replacing the engine. By that time you could have have the stuff installed already. I guess its just preference really.

If down time is not an issue I'd drop the motor. Easier install is a plus, but so is getting in and refreshing the engine bay and double checking all those hard to reach areas for problems. Could even use this time to clean up some things to give it a nicer appearance. Depending on age and milage, some detailing is never a bad thing.

When I do one job, I like to kill as many birds with one stone though if I can.

That is most likely the route I'll be going if I ever bother to rebuild my beaters transmission before winter sets in.

I just did this operation last month.
I live in central Nebraska, but had the car in Omaha at a friends shop in order to use the lift. I did the complete cam/springs/retainers/locks/pushrods/oilpump/timingset/headers/y-pipe/converter/HD2kit in a matter a few hours for three weekends. I'd guess it wasn't more than about 15-20hours each weekend, including time for lunch & errands to find parts.

Read, read, & read some more, ..., I did & it went really smooth.
