Question 2000 SS Oil Consumption

My friend has a stock 2000 SS and his "low oil" light came on, so he added about a quart thinking that when they serviced it last they did not fill it to the proper level. Well a week later the light came on again and it is about a quart low again. I checked under the car, valve covers, and heads and everything is clean. also there is no oil dip marks where he parks it.

Does anyone have an explaination of why it is consuming oil or where it is going?

some people is going to tell you aboutthe PCV system sucking oil, most ls1 with out the ls6 psv system do this, but not enough to drain a quart a week, how many miles are on the motor? does it smoke pretty bad? are you noticing any puddling uder the car?

LS1's burn oil, that is a fact that your friend will have to deal with. I do suggest though putting in more oil. If your low oil light comes on, its about 2-3 qts low, not just 1.

i agree that they do burn oil, but not a quart a week...no where near that. i have been on here tracking down the reason for my car blowing smoke at WOT for many months now and every one seems to say that is the good ol' ls1 oil consumption problem, well, i never even notice a drop in oil level. so, if thats the oil consumption im ok with it, but you shouldnt loose that much oil.

Default oil consumption

I was getting oil consumption pretty bad, 1QT in 500 miles. Was getting alot of blow my smoke at WOT. Still was under warranty at the time, took it to the dealer, there was a maintenance flash, for oil consumption on LS1 AND LS6. They can give you a print out if you want, but want it came down to, for me, was replacing the piston rings.

I have been having the same problem with mine, I do not drive it much at all. Ever since the cam install it has been burning quite a bit of oil

They told him at the dealership that it is more than likely the rings and that they have had that problem before with 2000 ls1's.

Now they are doing a 5,000 mile test to see how much it consumes before they replace the rings under warrenty.

How long does it take to replace? Do they do a block swap or do they open up the engine and replace just the rings?

When running mobil 1 1030 I would burn a little over a quart every 3k miles

Now i run GTX 5/30 and never burn a drop unless I rag on it for a couple hours.

Checking the dipstick will do wonders! Don't just go off the "low oil" light. He was probably driving around with 3.5 quarts... not too good...

Some LS1s have this problem. The problem lies in the way the engines are put together from the factory. They have certain tolerances that are allowed for a factory engine (as you may know). They actually have three different piston sizes for the particular cylinder size. I dont know what happened in 2000 but there were a lot of Vetts and Fbodies that had this oil burning issue, more than any other year.

The engine shop that is building my engine has 2 or 3 LS1s to re-ring from the factory every week. A good number of them are 2000 year models.

I have a 2000 SS and I have never had oil consumption problems but I did just blow a few pistons(rings). Not sure if I fried the pistons or the rings but most likely the rings/ringlands. Compression on 1 and 2 were ~ 150 and on 3,5,7 between 60-80!!

This was of course after running a turbo though
