Default Just joined the Dropped Valve club!!

Well, i just joined the club, and cant say that i am very happy. I got the car up and running, and tuned maybe a month ago and had some converter issues (slipping), but got it smogged and registered.

Fast forward to today, on the way to work. I get on it a little bit, then just started rolling with traffic for a little bit, when it starts making noise, stutters and dies. Got it towed home, pulled the codes and P0336 popped up.. Thinkin my sensor may be bad, i go to pull the starter to check on it, and the starter is busted.. First bad sign. Go to turn the engine over by hand, and it stops... Now its really not good. Pull the crank sensor, and it looks almost like its been hit lightly.

I hop up, yank the drivers side coils/valve covers and its all good.. Pull the passenger side, and its not so nice.. Spring furthest back is in two pieces, and there is no sign of the valve stem.. This was with a TSP 224R and Comp 918s.. I now know i should have been running a double, i didnt know it at the time..

Anyone want to take a guess at how much crap is broken? Ill be pulling the head soon.

Car: 01 WS.6
Lid, Ported TB, TSP224R, Comp 918s, stock manifolds/cats, SLP Y, LM1, Powerbond U/D pulley, Performabuilt Level 2 and 4k stall, 3.73s. Made 350rwhp when tuned.

if you go to crank it and it moves a bit then it stops, sounds like you locked it up . . . used longblocks aren't that expensive and usually you can part out the stuff you don't need. good luck!

oh **** your in turlock???? if you want i'll come by and help you with anything, just let me know

I dropped a valve with the 243 springs... I had to pull the motor and rebuild it. Good luck.

Thanks man, i appreciate it!

Got it apart, and it looks like ill probably need everything but a drivers side head. It completely DESTROYED the piston and rod. Ill post pics soon.

Wow that blows, I'm sorry. On a side note I must admit I was somewhat humored by the manner in which you worded this thread's title.

The damage to the piston is incredible, I didn't even know that was possible.

Wow, looks just like my hydro 346, minus the head damage. Tray, pistons, rods, all look identical.

What are your plans now?

Impressive carnage. VERY!

I have seen few valve drops look that devastating.

On a lighter note, I am sure we have most of the parts to help you out in any venture you wish, including NOT 918s lol.

I sure hear a lot of negative feedback and horror stories on the 918's. Surprised people run them. I thought Comp redesigned the 918's from their previous version...

Unfortunate that you had to learn this lesson the hard way.

When you are dealing with ANY aftermarket cam, you need to keep in mind that the springs do not have the same flexibility as stock, mushy valve springs.

The strength is there but the life will not be. Either based on time, milage, or RPM that motor turned, the life expectency signifgantly drops. Also allowing proper warm up before putting the car in a WOT situation.

I would replace the spring kit, 918's are fine, they do have flaws but quality has improved over time. If you are worried, try some springs from PAC or even look at a Dual coil spring. It should hold the valve up enough for the piston to hit it and bend it, not break the spring or pop it out of it's locks.
