How to tell a 4.8 from a 5.3 short block

I am assuming the only way to tell is to measure the stroke of the piston, other than that, is there any way to tell? Have a friend with a 5.3/4.8 block and we need to know what it is, what would the stroke be from BDC to TDC between the two in inches?

I've also heard a way to tell is if you look at the block, the displacement is cast onto it saying 4.8/5.3 If you are lucky enough for the block to still have its paint, there is the possibility of the paint marking being there to that marked which it was. All they did was put a paint mark on whichever the displacement was.
Also if you have the heads off and are looking at the pistons. The 4.8 has flat top pistons, while the 5.3 had a slight dish to them.
If none of the above work, you've got to do it the hard way.

if it still has the oem headgasket on it there will be a lil tab that sticks out the side and it will say either 4.8 or 5.3 (usally dirty need to clean it real good to see what it says)
or just pull a spark plug put the piston at tdc and see if its a dished or flat top piston
