Default Need Advice: Building a '99 Block.

I did a lot of searching but it seems like once I think I found an answer the next thread I read brings me back to square one. So I figured I'd just start a thread to try and answer my question.

I was given an LS1 with casting number 12559378, which going by this site- http://www.rapidomarine.com/default....sting_id_.aspx , is a 99-up block. It seems from what I've read they have oiling issues due to the lack of oil passages compared to the later blocks. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to build a stroker out of the block. Hone it .010" over and add a 4" crank along with forged rods and pistons. So I'd have a 383 and also occasionally run a 150 shot. Is this block really that useless that no one builds off of it? If that's the case I'll try to sell it since I wasn't planning on building a motor now anyway, this one just feel into my lap.

Before anyone says it I know that an LS2, LQ9, etc may be a better block to build off of but that's not what I'm asking.

I appreciate any input. Thanks.

Well lets look at this in worse case senario... How much can you sell the block for vs how much you can buy a better one for VS buying a 6.0 iron black that you dont have to worry as much about... I know you said you didnt want to hear about the 6.0 block, but when it comes to practicality, your pushing your best option away...

I agree with you, I hope my post didn't make me sound like an ******* hah. It's just that I got the engine for free, if it's not even worth building I'll just try to sell it. I just want to see if I can work with what I have.

The oil pumps or oiling issues? The pump would be replaced, probably by a Mellings unit. I'm not looking to make crazy numbers just seeing if I should invest my time and money into building a stroker out of the block. If I made 450 to the wheels I'd be happy.

Its not a big deal just use the block and keep a extra quart of oil in her. There are many guys on here running over 500 rwhp on. 97 to 99 blocks including my self that don't ever have oiling issues

Thanks for the input. What size motor are you running? Also, what exactly are the oiling problems? Oil consumption, low oil pressue, etc.

Run a ported LS6 pump and you will be fine. 450 at the wheels can be done easily with stock cubes if you don't want to stroke it and stay n/a

I know 450 is a doable number even with a 346, I'm just stating that I'm not looking to make crazy numbers. My car made 390 to the wheels when I had a 10 bolt. If I can reliably make mid to high 400's NA through a 9" I'd be happy.

Thanks again for all the input guys.

Looks like I'm going to try and build off the block.

Thanks again.
