What is the maximum horsepower that you are allowed to make?

345-350 depending on how heavy I keep the car. We dyno with a very specific set of rules (temp, number of pulls, hood closed..etc) we have a 9lb to 1hp limit.

We do most of our passing under braking, in a horspower limited class there are very few acceleration passes.
Moving the powerband up is interesting, as long as it wasn't too spongy off of the bottom?

Can we please not have this conversation again. Why give up power for RPMs?

You may be able to get away with an LS6 cam.

I agree- an LS6 cam (204/218 .555/.551 117.5) with its high LSA is about right - it provides a torque peak just norh of 4,800 rpm; the HP peak is a little of 6,000 rpm; but importantly the HP level reamains relatively flat out to 7,000 rpm. I do think it would be nice to do that on EPS lobes for dirve train stability and reduced wear.

That would be nice, a buddy has an LS6 cam laying around that he isn't using.

We had a guy in our class make around 375hp with a LS6 crate motor, he had an LS1 intake and longtubes. This would be too much for our class, he de-tuned it, but I would like to avoid that. Are the heads different as well? Maybe that is where he was getting all that power?

Thanks again for all the ideas, I am really incouraged

Yes, the LS6 heads (243 castings) flow more than LS1 heads (241 castings).

There is a guy...I think his name is Danny Popp? He has a road race C5 vette that has some monster high revving LS based motor, that thing revs to something like 8 grand? Wow that would be awesome in a track/weekend car! I am thinking pro-touring early second gen...drool!

Ok cool, I really like the idea of the production based cam, It should be usable over a bigger RPM range.
Some guys mentioned light valves, who makes them and what are they made of? Are they durable over continued use?

The 243 heads used on the LS6 come with hollow intake valves and sodium filled exhaust valves. 243 heads used on LS2s do not have these.

I do not know whether these can be used with your stock (241) heads. When you check with TSP about your motor's crank/rod setup you could ask them about light weight valve options, if any, for your existing heads.

I dont think anyone has mentioned balancing the rotating assembly for rpm increase on the bottom end, just throwing it out there..

I have ferrea stainless 2.00 / 1.55 hollow, tuliped and undercut valves in mine, they are pretty damn light, dont remeber the #'s though..
