Default Popular small cams

What were some popular choices in small cams back between 99-03 for LS1 engines?

Reason being, my car I found out has been tuned by the first owner and appears to have had a slightly bigger cam in it. Does the LS6 cam have any kind of slight rough idle what-so-ever? If not, then what are other small cams back in the day that gave just a slight rough idle. It's especially noticeable with the cutout open...not so much with it closed.

GMs Hotcam was popular, but MTIs Hammer cam was more populuar. Back then, 224 duration was considered big for a stock cube LS1, and single pattern grinds were common.

got an idle clip? the 221/221 seemed pretty popular back in the days. Ls6 cam will have no chop to it.

I will try to get a good vid up. I'm gonna change plugs and wires to see if that may clear the rough idle but looking over the bin file definitely points to a cam swap, and most likely the LS6 cam.

You won't hear an LS6 cam unless the tune is retarded or the cam was installed way off.

Recommend having a dyno session and then place the file in the dyno section here. Curves and peaks will how show aggressive the cam is from stock.

People have EPs on the brain.

This may sound silly, but maybe it had a blower on it and he left the blower cam in?

How big is the chop?

Yep ...I agree. The stock Z cam has a smooth idle, no chop at all.

I know you need a tune with any cam swap, but would it even be noticable with an LS6 cam in it? I've read of guys throwing in an LS6 cam and get MAYBE 10hp out? Idk if they were trolling or what, but just my .02 cents.

The most popular is probably the tr224 on a 112 lsa if you want a choppy idle and on a 114 lsa if you want a near stock idle.

Alot of people use to be on the 224/224 bandwagon back then. Every company had their own 224/224 grind.

It is some work, but if you really want to know pull the chain and look at the front of the cam. they usually have some sort of markings on them that you can use to figure out what they are.
