Default Safe to use "used" components for cam swap?

I am looking to piece together a used set-up for a cam swap. I am curious if it a terrible idea to re-use a set of pushrods and or valvesprings.

I would assume that even used hardened pushrods are better than stockers from what I hear about the stockers being weak.

How about valvesprings any issues there?

I am not trying to be too much of a cheapskate, but if I can safely save money by buying used parts, then I will gladly do so.

Thanks
Jeremy

Hardened pushrods are fine to reuse.

Valvesprings, not so much. You lose a spring, your motor will try to chew up and spit out the valve... that's all bad! Ask me how I know.. twice lol.

I did the same thing when I did my cam swap bought used TSP 228R cam, TSP harden pushrods and used 918 springs everything else I bought new like ls6 oil pump ,gaskets etc.. I spent a little over $600 for parts when I did mine. Just be sure to inspect the parts.

Pushrods are fine. Valvesprings I probably wouldn't, but in the least you could have the open/closed seat pressure checked and ideally compare to new springs to see where they are at.

I 've reused everything but the springs. Lifters are fine, rockers, pushrods if they are the correct length, timing set if looks ok even the front cover gasket should be ok. I would replace the front seal if it has a lot of mileage.

New parts are oil pump o ring , springs and matched retainers, valve cover gaskets if they are high milage, water pump gaskets and a new balancer bolt.

Never use used valve springs. They are cheap insurance.

Do it right the first time. Pushrods, springs, retainers, timing chain, oil pump. That way you know in your head you have covered all your bases.

its too easy to get burnt on used valve springs. i see people all the time selling patriot dual's (.650 lift) saying they are slightly used for 30K miles....then i ask what cam they were used on..."only a solid roller .640 lift 250 duration cam..."

yea thats no big deal

After my wife's car ate a valve, due to a broken 918, i checked spring pressures and they were almost dead nuts on spec. They were within a couple pounds.. I wouldnt trust used springs at all.

you could do it , but please don't , doing engine stuff inst like an oil change and if something screws up its expensive.

Yep, best advice put into words is right here on the subject matter.

Even if you are a pro and got access to tools...why would you want to go through hassle of replacing something.

Personally If I'm spending time/effort/money to mod the car, I do it to enhance it.

Not to worry about something taking a dump just to replace it again.
