Default Almost done with cam/spring swap butttt...

I was hammering on my crank pulley using a block of wood and it was ALMOST on, and i did one hard SMACK and i broke off a little piece of the lip, is it fucked up and i need to trash it? it doesnt seem like a belt would slip off. If I need another one, how much are they from GM, or where can I get them cheap online, or should i just go under drive pulley?

I did the same thing. Ran it for a few miles only because I wanted to hear the cam and make sure it was right and then bought a new ud. It ran fine but who knows what the long term affects could be

I think they're all right around $200. I went with SLP...Love it!

In the future....bake the pulley in the oven at 400* for 15 mins or so before sliding it on the snout...and then you can hit it with a board and hammer if needed (i did)

Or better yet..get a longer than stock crank bolt and let the bolt pull the pulley back on.

amen. Its not good to hit the balancer (or a piece of wood on the balancer). It is not good for the thrust bearing.

no no no no no no..
use the old bolt to put the balancer on and buy a new bolt from GM
WOW
you can use the old bolt to install the balancer initially and torque to 37 ft lbs then install new bolt.

Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (First Pass-Install a NEW Bolt After the Installation Pass and Tighten as Described in the First and Final Passes)
1st (37ft lbs)
2nd (240 ft lbs)
(Final Pass) 140 degrees

I just paid 175 shipepd for a brand new SLP 25% underdrive. Just do a google searcha nd find the cheapest price then have a vendor on here match it......you still get it cheap and still support our vendors.

Agreed - buy or make a tool to do the job correctly. Search is your friend - you'll find all the info you need. No heating or long bolts needed - and no burns or stripped crank threads.

Threaded rod - when using a bolt to pull in the balancer - the threads in the crank take all the stress, when using a stud/threaded rod - the threads on the tool where the nut is takes all the stress. No chance of messing up the crank threads.
