2000 ls1 high mileage rebuild
Ok looking for some input. I'm going to try to be proactive about my ls1, its been a great engine but sooner or later it is going to stop running. I was going to get something different but I like my car so I'm rebuilding it
What I'm looking for
over 400 rear wheel (450?)
daily driver (don't want to totally kill my gas mileage)
I want longevity, can change out valve springs xx,xxx miles if I need to.
Questions?
Rebuild my motor or just buy a short block?
stock cubes or 383 stroker?
what heads?
what cam for good power/retain some gas mileage
will run a 3000 stall

I sold my 2000 with 226,000 on it a month and a half ago...it still ran great, but was starting to show it's age...still made excellent power, but puffed oil smoke at high RPM, so I know where you're coming from...I even got 210K out of the first clutch lol.
I'd say don't go too nuts...your commute is about half of mine, but I know I wouldn't want to deal with a ridiculous setup daily...I'd say stick with a GM bottom end (like...a factory bottom end, no aftermarket parts) with some nice head work and a MILD cam.
If it were me, and me knowing how good my new LS3 2010 runs...I'd try to find a newer alumium 6.0 or 6.2 car/truck engine, buy the lingenfelter box so that your PCM can run the gen 4 engine, and give it a mild cam, long tubes and tuning.

Wow! I was expecting you to say 150k.
Def. time for a rebuild, even if it's been good to you.
Impressive as well. LS1's are stout.

I didn't do any research on the cost of an ls3 or what power I could get if I put a cam in one? How good are the stock ls3 heads, ect? I don't know many "good" machine shops are in my area so thats why I'm thinking about gettting a short block.

Yea Mike the ls6 combo would be a good replacement for my ls1. I think with a eps 222/226 cam & springs with a 3000-3200 stall
