Default Help! Camshaft bolts breaking!

I'm installing my camshaft, got the retainer plate in then go to install the sprocket and BAM! broke a bolt. so i go buy new arp bolts, BAM broke another one! i am only trying to torque it to 26 ft lbs and the break. now i got one stuck and i can get it out... gonna get a extractor and see if that will work...

Guess the big Q is what am i doing wrong? UGH so frustrated

If you are breaking them at 26 ft/lbs then your torque wrench is not calibrated. You will not break a grade 10.9 bolt at that torque.

26 ft-lb is the correct torque spec. I've never had this happen before, what kind of torque wrench (clicker or bar) do you have? have you ever had your torque wrench calibrated?

i'v used two different wrenches i have, both new. and when i apply the force it doesnt feel like much at all. turns so easy.... then SNAP and its off. does anyone have the specs for these bolts? only thing i can think of is that these bolts are longer? i am racking my brain and all my gear head friends brains on whats up...... IDK how you could brake these bolts so easy, and its so easy! they say 10.9 right on top!

Where did you get the torque wrench? Does it show calibration? Where I work we have to have them calibrated every year.

no way you would break a ARP bolt with just 26 ft/lb. something is either wrong with the calibration on your wrench or the threads might be fucked up.

Definitely unusual, especially an ARP. I would check out the threads

26 lbs is not really that tight. I can't believe your breaking cam plate bolts. Something is wrong somewhere.

Even if the bolts are too long or the threads are trashed, 26 ft-lbs is not enough to break a stock bolt or ARP. It wouldn't even break a grade 5 or 8.8 equivalent. You are reading the wrenches wrong or they are both way off. If you are using a 1/2" torque wrench at the very bottom of its scale, that might be the problem. Torque wrenches are not very accurate when you get to the very bottom of their scale.

Sure seems to me that you should be spinning the rotating assembly long before you break a bolt. That is really strange.

I would be curious to know the torque range of the wrench being used as well...
