I took off my timing cover today and ran into issues. First my cam gear has holes the size quarters going around it and the new one from gm is solid and looks to have a counter weight. Second I noticed the camshaft retainer has a seal, should I replace it. Also I have an ls6 and it has no chain dampner like it was suppose to. Please help I plan on putting together tommorrow.

someone is gonna say "GIVE US SOME PICS" so i guess i'll go ahead and do so. if you can't its no problem, just ask some other people. where are the holes at and are they in a pattern? if they are just random than you may have issues but if they look uniform theyre probably supposed to be there

Wow we got some rookies in here ![Nod](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_nod.gif)
OP, your motor cam sprocket is an LS1 sprocket, original equipment. The one you bought is an LS2 cam sprocket. The raised area is not a counter-weight. It is for a cam position sensor. The LS2s and newer engines moved the cam position pick-up from behind the intake to the cam sprocket. This does not effect you. Its a direct replacement, dont worry about the difference in the sprocket.
As for the cam retainer plate o'ring, it cannot be replaced to my knowledge. The only way to replace it is with an entirely new plate. This is available on the used market and new from GM parts. No after-market options are available to my knowledge. This o'ring typically lasts the life of the engine.

Hello , I also bought an LS2 timing set as the chain is a little bit thicker than the older LS1 chain . I'm going to use the cam gear because I will be running the LS2 cam with timing cover with cam sensor in the cover . The LS2 cam gear is heavier than the older LS1 cam gear . Would it be alright for poeple that don't need the front cam sensor to run the older LS1 cam gear as long as it is in good shape ?

PS: The replacement has countersunk holes and requires new bolts and a different torque value. Contact SDPC for more information. Here is a link to the GM plate information: Link
