Unidentified magnetic objects on drain plug and low and fluctuating oil pressure
Anybody know what this is? Looks like I'm missing about half of whatever it is. You can see it has a wear ring on the flat side like a fastener was once installed on it. Also, oil pressure was very erratic and low. I started pulling everything apart to inspect the oil pump and it looks fine. Any ideas???

Honestly I cant remember when I put the engine in. Its somewhere around 15 to 20k maybe even lower. I hardly ever drive the car and I put this engine in a couple years ago.

The weird thing is there are no weird noises or anything. The only thing is the low oil pressure and now it doesn't want to idle. It will idle if catch it a few times when the revs drop and then it sounds fine. No lifter tick, nothing. But you are right, it looks like the end that captures the roller. That sucks. I didn't want to pull the heads again. Thanks for the info though! I wouldn't have guessed a lifter. The lobe is probably trashed but hopefully it didn't scar up the lifter bore.

I bought the short block already built off this forum a while back and when I got it I went over everything with a fine tooth comb and couldn't find anything. I have changed the oil several times and this is the first sign of any large metallic parts on the drain plug. I have the usual liquid metal crap that sticks to the magnet but thats it and its been minimal. I know there is something wrong cause the oil pressure is bouncing all over the place though. I think I might just pull it and replace the lifters and cam if need be and double check bearing clearances and sell this thing. I have a little girl now! I cant afford these toys like I used too lol

I would NOT run that thing at ALL until you get the heads pulled, and the lifters out. You may need a new cam, because like was said, that looks like the roller end of an LS1 Lifter.
You may get lucky, and the spring pressure/preload could be keeping the roller in place, but tear it down asap, before anything else goes. Also, lifter issues can cause oil pressure issues.

Yeah it's not going anywhere. Trans is already out for some work, the blower is off, oil pump is off. Dont have the heads off yet but I'm getting there. I'll probably pull the engine today and double check bearing clearances also. Make sure no trash got pushed into any of the journals.

Well the good news is the lifter that broke didn't trash my motor.
The bad news is another lifter trashed my cam. There is a pretty good flat spot cut in the top of one of the lobes.
Still haven't found the reason for the oil pressure issue.

Well when I bought the engine I was told they were LS7 lifters but obviously they are not. Like was said, they look to be stock LS6 lifters. When I bought the engine, I didn't really know any better. I have learned a lot about these engines since then as this was my first LSx motor.
I'll have pics of the cam and pistons tomorrow. The pistons are Diamond dished pistons with Compstar rods with a stock crank. Has ARP main and head studs with ARP2000 rod bolts and apparently shitty stock lifters lol The thing is, I dont race the car, I only bought the forged bottom end because it was reasonably priced for what it had in it and I needed another short block because my block had a hole in the side of it from water ingestion. The car never goes past 6500 and never sees the track and the maggie is only a 112 so its not to crazy.
I'm just glad it didn't scar up the lifter bore and trash something else. Live and learn!
