Question Cam lift and valve clearance

I have been kicking around the idea of getting a cam lately. I've done research and think I have it narrowed down to a few choices. After talking with a friend, he told me that there may be issues with pistons and valves hitting if you have too much lift. Although I know there are some clearance things to worry about, what is the "magic number" when looking at lift that you have to start worrying about clearance?

Thanks

there is no magic numbers, to many variables like; cam size, gasket thickness, deck height of the heads, degree the cam is install, ect.

Another thing to keep in mind is not just lift but how much duration. I am running a 224 581 on a 112 lobe sep. with .030 milled heads. I couldn't get away with anymore duration with that kind of lift with the heads milled that much. I would talk to Thunder, Speed inc, Lg, or Texas Speed. They have installed enough of cams to give you a very good idea. If you have stock heads or rather you havent milled them anyways you can run the g5x-2 or the new Thunder cam without any problems. Dont forget to include the idea of how much advance is ground into the cam or how much advance you dial it in when installing the cam. Hope this helps.

How about like the gt2-3 or MTI stealth or "old man" cam on stock heads?

I am looking for something that wont change the idle much like these. I don't plan to ever change heads or really even touch the motor except the cam.

My friend (who's recently been on the phone with comp ordering his cam) told me that the .580 lift would cause a problem...
The cam he ordered was like a 230/240 duration. Could this be why he thought that would be a problem and those lifts would be ok on a 220/220 but not a larger cam?

Thanks for the responses..

That is most likely the reason they steered him away from that one. Also on the 224 581 with xer lobes they say that it is a spring eater. I plan on changing mine every 10k miles so I didnt worry about it. But if memory serves me right isnt the g5x2 cam have more duration and more lift than the one you just listed. If stock headed I cant see the problem. Maybe they are more concerned with valve spring life. Maybe someone else can put some more info on the table.

gt2-3 -- 207/220 .573/.580
mti stealth -- 220/220 .581/.581 115 LSA
TR "old man cam" -- 215/220 .600/.523 115 LSA

The g5x2 is a .595/609 lift cam.

Those are the specs on the cams I'm considering. Keep in mind this is really far off. I plan on doing an LS6 intake and ASP pulley either at the same time or before the cam. Maybe eventually a TC after (nothing big, 2800-3200). The rest of my mods are in my sig.

Which of these (the top three) cams do ya'll think would be good my my mods? Or are there other good cams that will idle very stock and be stealthy?

you can knock the x2 off the list considering your TC choices.

out of those i'd go with the stealth or old man cam, they'll be nicely suited to your TC choice.

I realize now that the arrangement of that last message was confusing. the x2 was not an option for me. It was there in response to an earlier post.

With your TC choice and the fact that you do not want to change your idle radically I would suggest the stealth cam. This will work well with the stock heads and also does not have huge lift. This will help extend spring life also.
