228r cam/Head Combo questions
Well my head gasket blew on my 2001 WS6, so its time for upgrades. I was planning on using a Texas Speed 228R cam with 112lsa.
I have a couple options on heads though. I can get 317s dirt cheap like 75 bucks for the set. If i go with those i was going to get them ported and get a valve job done as well as getting them milled to about the same as the 243/799 heads so my compression wont suffer. My other option is to get a set of 243 or 799 heads and get them ported with a valve job as well.
Im looking for some opinions and or criticism on my setup ideas. Which set of heads should I go with or will they basically all yield the same results because they are virtually all the same? I know if i go with the 317s im limiting cam choice due to Piston to valve clearance. Any opinions on the cam choice? I like the Texas Speed cams but am open to suggestion. I drive this car all the time, so im also wondering what driveability would be like with that cam. Any suggestions on Springs would be appreciated as well.
Any ideas on power numbers or E/T's might be in a full weight Manual T56 Trans Am with supporting mods.

The 228R is a great camshaft choice for a nice bump in power and great drivability to go along with it. I would recommend going with the 243/799 casting cylinder head to compliment the setup.

My Goal is around 450RWHP or more. Do you think that Is doable? Shooting for 11.50s or lower. And how is the Idle with this cam. do you think I should go bigger or am I about right with this cam. Also how much work do I need to get done to the heads to reach my goals.

I'm not really saying that I'm gonna go cheap on the heads. Just asking opinions. I would like to do a valve job and some porting on some 799/243 heads and put them on. As far as cam goes I'm open to suggestions. The 228 cam is just something I saw when researching that I thought would be suitable for my needs. I have no problem taking a couple steps up from that but the car definatly has to be streetable in traffic situations and what not. And as stated I have a 6 speed car not auto. What heads were you using with your 228 and with what mods on the heads? I'm not dead set on it having to be 450rwhp but it'd be nice. Id settle for 430 440. Whatever..... just really looking for a streetable mid to low 11 second ride.

im looking to get about the same ball park as you, just mine is a A4 with a 3600 stall and I dont dd mine. I was looking at the same TSP package with the M4 cam. Still reading a bunch to see if I am in the right direction or not.

My personal opinion is youre gonna need more cam for 450 wheel. Thats not to say the 228R won't run better and even potentially be faster on the street. I daily drive a 238/240 112 LSA and I don't have a problem in traffic. I think I'm crazy though. I would lean in the mid 230s range to get what you want though. 230/236 112LSA is whats coming to my mind.

What about the Texas Speed 233/239 on a 112? That's a little bigger then the 228R and seems like it should be plenty big enough to do what I'm looking for with some 243/799 heads. I'm pretty certain that's what I'm gonna go with. Input????

you will need some good ported heads and big cam to break 450hp.a big race cam is harder to tune ,but you got a M6.whats your budget ? check the dyno section for combos that meet your goals.

I've seen plenty of combos with cams around the same sizes as what I'm looking at with some mild 243s that are around those power numbers. Like I said it doesn't need to be 450 on the nose. Just somewhere close to that. My car feels pretty good as is right now. Just wanted to make it a neck breaking street car with a nice sounding choppy idle. And like I said 11s - 11.50s is plenty fast enough for a car I drive to work almost every day. I have a Single Turbo SBC 68 Chevelle for the real fast stuff

To get you close to that 450rwhp number, and still retain decent drivability, I would go with the PRC 2.5 LS6 heads and our Torquer V3... With a good tune, I think it will be exactly what you are looking for.

Maybe ill look into the torquer v3. How is that cam with driveability? And msydow. Were those numbers with that cam both with stock heads?? I'm for sure getting the 243 heads because I blew a head gasket and there gonna be off anyways so there's no sense in not doing it. Id be pretty content with 420 or 430rwhp. And I should be able to squeeze a little more since I'm doin the heads too correct?

maybe a 232/238 595/585 113+3 XER lobes on intake and Xe on exh. it puts your IVO 7 IVC 45 IVC 54 EVO 4 and a overlap of 11 this cam would be a little more radical then a 228 and will need to be twisted a little higher.... The 228 cam I had was a great daily driver and If I ever did go back to a 346 I would not hesitate to run it again plus it had GTP heads!!! I also had the good old 221/221 558/558 T1 MTI cam back in the day with the same GTP heads and the car was running 11.4's @ 123 with 1.4 60's all day full weight plus the 12 bolt and a cage! I really think I could of got the car in the lower 11's after weight reduction but the 228 did it with ease

You really should select your heads first then the cam. Depending on what you now own and how much time you have, a port job by AI might be a good bargain and get you close to your goals. They can work magic on the less costly 853 and 241 castings.
