Question Cam Selection...Stock Stall...(Please Look)

Hello All,

I want to start by saying I have spent a lot of time searching, and I understand that the vast majority of the people on this board are anti-cam for a non-stalled A4.

Here is the reason I ask: My dad is a 61y/o retiree. He has achieved his dream of retiring early and purchasing a nice used vette (12K mile 98 Vert Auto). So, this is for a 60+y/o man who has absolutely no interest in drag racing. This car is used to drive back and fourth to car shows and occasionaly 2 hour trips to NC from VA.

He wants a little more power so I said I would do the research. The car is currently equipped with stock manifolds, plan to install:
cam
Single 918 valvesprings
LS6 intake manifold
PP throttle body
Air lid like Callaway

These are the initial cams I researched:

NOTE: I am not 100% sure that the overlap figures are correct, I used an online configurator and I have found some confilicting information. Take this as a ballpark.

Thunder CheatR (219/230 607/604 117 lsa) Overlap = -9.5*

Comp Cam (222/224 581 588 114 +1 advance) Overlap = -5*

Comp Cam (222/222 581 581 114) Overlap = -6*

TR "TRuTorq" Level 1 (219/224 .609/.604 115 LSA) Overlap=-8.5*

TSP custom grind (219/222 607 lsl/.602 lxl 115lsa +3 Advance) Overlap= -9.5*

TSP custom grind (215/222 .604 lsl/.602 lxl 115lsa +3 Advance) Overlap= -11.5*

TSP 220r: (220/220 .581/.581 115lsa) Overlap = -10*

Thunder Old man (214/220 .600/.523 115 LSA) Overlap = -13*

COMP 54-412-11 (212.0/218.0 0.522/0.529 114LSA) Overlap = -13*

COMP 54-451-11 (208.0/212.0 0.554/0.558 115LSA) Overlap = -20*

'02+ C5Z06 cam (204/218 .551/.547 117 LSA) Overlap = -23*

This is my final list for consideration, from large to small:
EPS custom grind (218/230 .595"/.600" 115LSA +4 advance) Overlap = -6*

Custom Patrick G (218/226 .598EPS/.570XE 116LSA +4) Overlap = -10

VHP 056 (216/224 0.551/0.551 114.5 LSA) Overlap = -9*

Version of Ragtop99s cam (210/222 114 +4 .595XFI/.581XER) Overlap = -12

EPS TT1- (214/220 .600"/.564 115lsa) Overlap = -13*

Comp 55-424-11 (212/218 .558/.563 115LSA) Overlap = -15*

Further narrowed the list

EPS custom grind (218/230 .595"/.600" 115LSA +4 advance) Overlap = -6*

Custom Patrick G (218/226 .598EPS/.570XE 116LSA +4) Overlap = -10

For archive purposes here is the flow data for a stock LS1 head (Thanks LS1 Tech)
LIFT INT EXH
0.050 34.0 23.5
0.100 67.0 51.9
0.200 121.0 99.6
0.300 171.0 132.5
0.400 214.0 155.7
0.500 222.0 170.0
0.600 227.0 179.6
0.700 231.0 185.0

Can I achieve 400HP (340WHP), and stock driveability with this setup? Stock Vacuum, no pushing through brakes, etc...?

Thanks in advance!

-Nick

I ran a Comp 55-424-11

http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Category_Code=

with yellow LS3 springs. It's a step up from the Z06 cam, with a nice flat torque curve. With an intake, TB, and headers, this will put you well over 340 rwhp. Easy to tune, lots of vaccuum, fun to drive, almost stock sounding. It has a very good midrange increase throughout the entire powerband, but tends to lay flat after 6k.

I have a PP TB on my car. Just FYI, there is no little knub on the pulley for the cruise control. Had to have something fabbed up.

No matter what you say your goals are, guys will still come in and recommend some donkey-dick cam.

If you want more info or a dyno graph, send me a PM.

i have a 98 camaro and it still has the stock converter in it. I run a comp cams xer273 224/230 .581 .588 with comp cam 918 springs. The stock converter is a little tight im not going to lie, but it doesnt adversely effect the driveability of the car much at all. Before i got a mail order tune from pcmforless the car wanted to stall at stop signs and red lights so i def would recommend a tune either mail order or dyno to get the car easier to drive. The only real issue i have now is if you try to go in reverse from a dead stop the converter makes the trans slam into reverse gear. Any of those cams you listed shouldnt be a problem if you get a tune. I'm still planning on installing a 3600 stall so i can get the most out of my car at the drag strip, but if you plan on driving the car and not racing it you should be fine. Any other questions hit me up with a PM.

What about the comp cams 212/218 cam? Theres a low lift version and a high lift version which I was actually considering myself before I bought my 228r. The high lift version is around .565 I believe and they actually call it a ls6 street replacement cam. I've also heard its a very torquey cam so it should be tons of fun on the street! Oops should have gone to that link above, same damn cam sorry

I would swap in a 3:42 Getrag from a Z06, small stall, intake and do some exhaust work with a nice tune. He won't have any drive ability issues and it will really wake the car up. Then when he wants more, the stall and gears are already there. Cam first is doing things backwards.

Cam is easier to do work wise thats why i did it first before the stall, i already got gears so it works...but if i had a lift i would have did the stall first no doubt...

Call Shane at Thunder Racing and see what he recommends or have him custom spec you one. They used to have one called the "old man cam" or something.

Yeah the "Old Man Cam" - 214/220 .600/.523 115 LSA, is very similar to the EPS TT1- 214(.600")/220(.564") 115lsa, but with a little bit more lift on the Exhaust lobes.

The Thunder and EPS cam profiles look to be the "best" fit to me for that application imo.

IMO, for a nice cam with modern lobes, that's easy on the valve springs I think the EPS TT1 would be a great choice.
BTW, don't bother with the Z06 cam, unless you mainly want additional top-end power over stock.
Slightly off topic, but a set of Magnaflow #14210 mufflers (about$125 ea.) should fit in the stock locations with minimal modifications.

Thanks All, I updated the list above. The EPSTT1 looks very attractive. I like the idea behind those specific cam lobes.

'99 Blu~ How were you calculating overlap?

BTW: I just found a nice set of used TI exhaust that I think I may buy him for his birthday

if you're only looking for 340hp...just put headers, a cai and tune on it. no need to crack open a 12k mile engine for such little hp desire. those mods would easily retain perfect drivebability and mileage better than stock. if you must cam it, i wouldn't go any larger than an ls6 cam.

Do full bolt-ons like mentioned above and if you really want to get into the motor I'd say a z06 cam. If he goes to car shows does he want it to have some chop to it?
