I have a 98z28 with slp lid, 3200stall shiftkit,8.8rearend with 355gear,3inch exhoust.and a custom tune.with that all said what cam would you guys recommend for low end torque and mid end id say 1800 to 6500 or so with alot of thump...i thought bout the comp cam big ***** thumper

I think something like a cam motion 228/232 or s futral f13 on a 112 lsa would be the ticket the larger duration would give a nice lope and the 112 lsa would keep the power and tq down low

A TSP TV2 performs well with a 3200 stall. And if you really want to wake it up add some Stage 1 243 heads.

+1 on the custom grind, it will be best suited to how you drive. I take it you won't be doing much street driving if your looking at a cam with 109* lsa.

Get custom if you can afford it, but if budget minded like me you can prob find a used cam in like 224 range...I paid 150 for my comp cams xer273 (224/230 .58x 114) it gives up no Low end tq compared to stock, but it pulls til 6800rpm and shaved about 7 tenths off my quarter mile time...good cam....just search the classifieds you will find one...Any bigger than that size and you will start to give up tq downlow in order to get high rpm hp, which is good for racing but not the street

You got to that before I could. I don't know why everyone thinks a custom grind costs more. Even if it did, wouldn't it be worth the extra money to know you're getting something that is specefically designed to work best with your mods and goals. To me, it's a no-brainer. If you got the cash to drop on a cam or heads/cam, then do it right the first time.

Most people are satisfied with the off shelf offerings in terms of the dyno numbers they see associated with a particular cam, and also the way they sound on YouTube. Then there are those that don't wanna hassle with filling out queries to spec a cam, and talk on phone about your desires, instead click pay now on a site and 6-8 business days later...voila..a cam! I ran a TV2 prior to building my LS6, and I loved it...until I ran my custom specd 227/235 by Pat G on LSL lobes.

True, but you also run the risk of having some negative aspects that can be avoided with a custom grind. That's not to say that we should give up on off the shelf cams, just that there is a market for both. Not knowing the OPs intentions, other than strong down low /mid range with a lot of lope it's kind of hard to say, yeah just go with that one.

When I added shipping a wait time, an off the shelf is fine....I would only go custom if I had a radical set up...75% of people (like the guy posting) will be fine with off the shelf... It seems every time someone asks for a cam recommendation instantly everyone goes "get a custom, hit up pat g" while I understand he is the ls cam guru, you guys make people think that if you don't have a custom cam you are leaving tons of hp and tq on the table...this isn't true...just my humble (lol) opinion

I think sound clips will give you a good idea of how much lope you can expect from any given cam. Here is a 226/234 on 110 LSA:

This cam pulls to 6700. It runs roughly the same times whether you shift at 6400 or 6600.

I think you'd be happy with something in the high 220's intake and lower 230's exhaust with either a 111 or 110 LSA to give it more chop. Examples would be 228/232 110 or 111 LSA, 227/231 110 or 111 LSA, 226/232 110 or 111 LSA, or maybe even something like a 230/234 110 or 111 LSA. If you want to go custom grind, talk to Ed Curtis.
