Hey guys,

I have been pricing a bunch of heads recently for the car in my SIG, and I was originally going with PRC stage 2.5s with the 233/239 and the rest of the supporting mods.

I then decided to look into the PRC 215's, and the other offerings like the Trick flow as cast 220's.

But I found a set of Mamo ported AFR 225s with 68cc chamber for a decent price and I was wondering if I would be happy with these on my stock bottom end. I dont plan on doing a stroker anytime soon, no forced induction.

The car is not a daily driver, I will be having it tuned by Patrick G more than likely, and I am going to get a FAST intake someday when budget allows.

Any advice?

Well its like this, I don't want go sacrifice any low end power because they are too big.

But if they are not going to sacrfice that low end then I'm buying them.

The PRC's you were considering have the about the same size intake runner as the AFR 225's, in case you didn't know. If you're getting a good deal on them, get the AFR's and mill them down to bump up the compression.

Well I didn't know that, so thanks! How far can you mill until you throw off clearances when mounting the intake, and when valvetrain geometry gets messed up?

Well I have heard that since they might have the 2.08 valve they might not work on a stock shortblock 5.7 So i think I am back to the drawing board.

I guess what I don't understand is this: The intake runner volume for the AFR 225 heads is, or very close to, 225cc. All the ported 243 heads I've been looking at range from 226cc all way up to 234cc. I see people all the time running AI 226 ported 243 heads on stock cubes and no one says, "that's too big". How is an AFR 225 head too big when all ported 243's have a bigger intake runner? I would say if you're getting a good deal on them, then go for it.

That was just what the owner of the head was concerned about, so he told me to get on and ask.

I think the only concern is the 2.08 valve being too large and after milling the head to get down to a 61-62cc chamber is going to cause piston to valve clearance issues.

You are right about the larger valves causing less piston to valve clearance. Plus, like you said, you would want to mill them down some to bump compression so the car doesn't feel so lazy down in the lower RPM's. Tough call man. Sounds like what you really need is a used set of AFR 205 heads. But then again, don't we all.

Guess its between some PRC 215s, Trick Flow as cast, or some AI ported 799s.

The PRC 215 heads are small bore head and Texas Speed is always saying they are the way to go because the valve angle allows you to mill more and still have good piston to valve clearance. The do cost a bit more than some TFS 220 as cast heads.

I've got another thread going where I'm debating between ported 243/799 heads or going with TFS 220 as cast heads. If you don't already have 243/799 heads, you've got to buy them ($400 to $500), get them ported ($900 to $1,200), pay to have them shipped, etc. When you add it all up, your in it for more than you could have got the TFS 220 heads for ($1,700). My big question is will a 243/799 ported head be better than the TFS 220 heads?

I have the same exact question. By the sounds of things the benefit to the tfs is that one day when you want to port them you have a lot more room to go. You can only go so far with the stock castings.

The TFS 220cc heads will usually perform better than a ported 243/799 head as a general statement but not always. DJ Fury down here has AI 243's on his 346 and made 465+- IIRC. But I saw the car run 11.7 trapping 123+ spinning so that trap suggests 11.0's with better tires/suspension. He was pedaling out of the hole all day. I believe this is a full weight car.... The TFS have a thicker deck so if a power adder is in the works no brainer here. The 220's are on my car and I am very happy with then. Head only change I picked up 19/19 over a ported 5.3 sponsor head...

Those AFR are just not designed for your bore so I would pass. LS3 bore and up they are optimized and wicked heads IMO
