Default Ls6 cam in my ls1

I have an 02 ss camaro full bolt ons. I'm planing on installing an ls6 cam next. I already have the cam and the hardened push rods. Just curious what all should I replace as well. Car has 90k miles. Thanks

I would go with a bigger cam. Even a baby cam like a 224 is going to out perform an LS6 cam and still drive like stock.

For the amount of work and tear down, I don't think the LS6 cam is worth it.

2002+ LS6 cam
204/218 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.551" / 0.547" int/exh lift
117 LSA

224R
224/224 .581"/.581"
112 or 114 LSA

LS6 cam with a tune = 18whp, vs ls1 cam.

You can save a lot by using new GM ls6 springs $70. If you put in any bigger cams the springs will cost more.

I'm in the same position right now, I dont want to put in a wussy cam and do all that work when I can put in a cam that can make 30-50hp, even though it costs more.

Replace the timing chain at least with a Ls2 chain $40. Replace the oil pump. Even the new stock oil pumps from GM are better then the ones made back in the day for the f-bodies. Use new o-ring seals also.

In the right combo the ls6 cam can be a good performer with near identical manners as a stock ls1 cam.

Would I choose something else? If I had a few hundred more bucks, sure... Shoe string budget and I could do my own labor? Probably not.

I already have the ls2 timing chain/gear setup and an ls6 ported oil pump. I wouldnt mind getting a different cam but I already have an ls6 cam and I can do the work myself. I just need to know what else I should change while everything is apart. Thanks for the replies.

I can see you trying to get around emissions in Cali but there are cams that are bigger and will out perform that cam and still get past emissions. It's worth spending the extra cash and do it right the first time so you don't have to tear into it again.

My bone stock ls1 made 308 rwhp, ls6 cam with tune made 338 rwhp. I could feel difference before and after but like already mentioned.....if budget allows, get a bigger cam.

27rwhp is a nice gain. Thats about what I usually see gained from the LS6 cam 25-30rwhp w/ tune.

Lots of good info here. A 224r is a good cam but it needs to be at least a 114 LSA to have a shot at passing. Its not just the sniffer test you have to worry about its the whole diagnostics system to include but not limited to knock sensors, misfires, etc.

Check out the Texas Speed 228R camshaft, my brother put the LS6 Camshaft in his WS6 and we considered it a baby step towards performance after that. With the amount of time and work, the 228R is a good camshaft. I think it's .228 and .588 with a 112 LSA, not a bad camshaft for killing zombies in Mustangs.

I agree.. I thought about this a month or so ago and after going through all the work of putting the cam and springs in and everything I would have been pissed if I went with a little ls6 cam. Not worth it IMO. Might as well do all the bolt-ons.
