Exclamation 1998 Camaro, Engine Build Up

The motor in my Camaro went out and I'm thinking about a new motor. I have $2000-3000 to spend and I would like to get about 400+ rwhp n/a. Any ideas on setups and tuning options.

pretty easy with heads and cam, first get headers ported tb and lid....urs is a 98 so it might be worth while to invest in a ls6 or a fast intake

I have been told on other forums that i should run a lq4 with l92 heads. What do you think about this.

You will need to up your budget for the l92 heads. I was going to say in my last post before I hit the button by mistake, Lq4, reuse stock heads after a good valve job, cam, springs, oil pump timing set and Ls6 manifold and you will have what you want within your budget.

The engine has 250,000 miles on it and I was going to take it apart to find out whats wrong and sell the parts that do work. I think I can up my budget by about $2000 if I have to. I was also thinking about maybe adding a turbo or nitrous kit. Any advice. This is my first full engine swap.

I would rather just put a whole new motor in it. Don't worry I'll find a project for it or I'll sell it to a good owner.

I say pick up an LY6, Co-Part has them for under 2000. Its a 6.0L Bottom End with L92 Rectangle Port Heads. Throw a cam in and BOOM 400rwhp.

97-98 blocks are basically unrebuildable. The cylinder walls are so thin they can't take a minor hone before they are too thin. Your best bet price wise will be an Lq4. They can be had for $1200 and less for a running motor out of a wrecked 2000 or newer truck.

I'll throw in a vote for an lq4 block too....228/232 cam and if you can fit it in your budget a set of ported/ milled 243 heads.

Don't forget money for a tune too.

If I do go with the 6.0l, do i have to change the transmission. Would an ls2 or ls6 transmission work.

Externally they are the same as an ls1, except you might need to drill/ tap a bolt hole in the front of the block for your altenator, or power steering....can't remember which, but I know it is missing one bolt hole....same trannies, same engine mounts, one just has a bigger bore and made of iron

Yep.

The 6 liter is missing the bolt hole for the alternator. The boss is there you just have to drill and tap it.

Don think it would really matter that much. You may notice the difference though.
