Default building a cheap short stroke motor

So, I got a 3.185 stroke crank, really cheaply. I also have a set of forged 4.030 pistons.

So, what block and rods should I use? I am thinking high rev 330.

Is the crank out of a stock 4.8? If it is, and the pub height is tight you can probably use stock 4.8 rods. Look for a la4/9, or 4.8/5.3 iron block and bore it out....good strong and pretty much the same blocks, just different bore sizes, so whichever you can get cheaper.

Just curious, what are your plans? Going FI?

The cranks is a Callies Magnum XL.

No plans yet, just had a set of spare forged pistons and acquired this crank.

Since the pistons I own are 11:1, I thought I'd build this as a NO2 motor and stuff it in a 70 Camaro or something.

What compression distance on those pistons?

They're Wiseco pistons part #K464x3 so the compression distance is 1.110"

Nice, kinda like the old 69 302 on steroids lol. Sounds fun, throw on an average set of stock potted heads, midsized cam and it should be a screamer!

That's the plan.

The sad thing, is that I don't even have a car for this yet... then again, this is pretty much how all my projects start.

I think I may use a set of l92 heads I have here... also have a set of GMPP 1.85 rockers, so I could throw a hot cam in it, springs and call it good.

Jeez, so you need in the neighborhood of a 6.53x" rod with a .927" small end.....Hmm.

Not sure I really need it... heh, could just go with a stock length rod and be short stroking.

Got something that would work?

That's sort of the point, my friend.

Seeing what I can put together with the sum of cheap cast off parts.

Also, I am not married to 330". I can go with whatever fits the crank and pistons, as that's all I own at this point.

I do want to rev the **** out of it though.

I spin my 408 to 8,000 rpms and it sounds like God is pissed and coming for ya....I couldn't imagine what a 10,000+ rpm ls motor would sound like lol

I look forward to that. I built a forged 408 with a Whipple 3.3L huffer on top for my 70 GMC. No idea what it's redline will be yet.

I think small cubes, winding high will be fun.

You could run a shorter rod than that, but your pistons would be WAY down in the hole. You'd have the same displacement still. You'd be way down on compression, have terrible quench, etc. If you do it, you want the longer rod!!

If Matt doesn't have it I think he can find someone to make it lol

Ok this it going to sound strange, but have you looked at, or heard of running Honda rods?

I haven't really looked too hard at anything, but that could be funny.

I did find a set of Ferrari V12 Carrillo rods that would work in my parts bin, but that would be a bit much... considering that they were probably 8K. My father used to restore classic and exotic cars.

Yes and no...shelf stock won't work....BBC comes closest with the 6.535" length, but has the wrong sizing on both ends.

Likely going to be a custom rod (there goes the budget aspect of this build). Might be less expensive and faster build time to get a shelf stock rod and custom piston!
