Martin, Just wondering if you could run PAC 1518 springs with the Torquemax SNS 2 cam. I already have a set of those, so just wanted to see if they would work. I also have a set of 7.425 pushrods and was wondering if they would work with that cam also.

While I like to use a dual spring for every aftermarket cam, the PAC 1518's will work with the milder lobe option. Again, with the push rods we like to use 7.400", but the 7.425" will work fine with stock heads that have not been milled and a stock thickness head gasket.

Thanks Martin, guess I will have to use the dual springs as I want to use the standard lobes. I will be able to use the pushrods as everything is stock. Thanks for the quick response, just waiting for tax refund to place order.

You will only notice a 3-5rwhp difference between the two lobe sets. You'll get longer mileage out of the milder lobes also. I normally recommend the mild lobes to customers that DD their cars, or drive their cars a lot of miles per year. In your case, it would be to use the parts you currently have.

Martin, my car is not a DD. Its just a nice day or weekend car. That being said, could I run the stage 3 SNS/mild version with the PAC 1518 springs? Would just like to get the most out of a cam only and bolt ons with this car. My SS is a M6. Just want as much low end power as possible as it's only driven on the steet.

Any of the mild version SNS cams could be run with beehive springs. I just don't recommend them because if the spring breaks, you have no other spring to save your *** from dropping a valve into your motor.

FYI Judge Smales, the stage 2 SNS/mild version does get into it's power-band at a lower(-200)rpm then the stage 3 SNS, just something to consider.

Martin, i have a 67 camaro convertible that i dropped a 5.3L into, aluminum 862 heads (stock), Professional Products Power+Plus Typhoon Intake (52061), 1-5/8" midrange headers into 2" true dual exhaust, 4l60E transmission, and 2:73 differential. A couple of forum members recommended some LS1-LS6 tick cams:

"SNS" torqueMAX Stage 1 223/227 | .61x"/.61x" | LSA111+2 (milder: 222/226 | .59x"/.59x" | LSA111+2)

Street Heat Stage 1 221/226 | .60x”/.60x” | LSA115+2

For 5.3, would these be too aggressive for a 3500ish lb car? After their initial posts they both backed off to a 212/218 duration for missing engine cubes. What would you propose would work well with stock 5.3L? This will be a daily driver, and i'm looking for the biggest midrange performance bang for the buck.

Thanks,

Alan

I've got a couple big lifted trucks that are installing their Stage 1 cams right now. One is a 6.0 on 37's! No passenger cars yet, everyone wants that damn Stage 2 cam! It's a popular little buggar!

Alan,

I would go with the Stage 1 TorqueMAX cam(223/227 .610"/.614" 111+2). A lot of people forget that the 5.3 has the same stroke as a 5.7 or 6.0 and a 6.2. Because of this it spends the same amount of time at TDC and BDC of those other larger engines and needs to be cammed similarly. Yes the bore is smaller so it will need a little smaller cam, but my cams for a 5.3 are very similar to my 5.7/6.0 cams.

No I didn't back-off from my first suggestion, I only agreed with the other poster that with stock stall an the tall rear gears a smaller 212/218 cam would be better choice. IMO, if going with shorter rear gears and and a higher stall TC(2800-3200) won't fit with in your budget along with the cam swap, then I'd suggest going with the appropriate gears and stall first, then later when fund permit do a cam upgrade.

Thanks for the second opinion, I'll keep this cam in mind.

Understood, and changing gears or TC before camming is solid advice that i'll need to work into my build. At least now i have an idea of a cam i can go with.

Thanks both!

The standard lobes have a 50 degree major intensity. Add 50 degrees to the .050" duration numbers and you'll get the advertised .006" durations. Unfortunately the mild lobes are proprietary.
