ABSOLUTELY crucial to have stall and gears with cam swap?
hey guys so basically i am gonna be doing a cam swap for my 2000 a4 z28 within the next month, i plan on doing the tsp v2 with stage 2.5 ls6 heads. also upgrading lifters oil pump and intake manifold to complement my cam. here is my problem i would like to know if i really need to have a stall and gears right away to go along with the cam or will it be ok to run for a little bit on the stock stall and 3.23 rear end?? now i DO NOT intend on taking it to the track during that time but i would like to make some pulls on the highway maybe i just wanna know if it would be safe to do so with the stock setup?

ok then in regards to the stall what would go really well with the v2 from texas speed, plus i do plan on doing gears in the future but only 3.42's so that would have to be taken into consideration as well

I had the 228r and they are fairly similar. I had a performabuilt 9.5" 3000 stall and I really liked it. I wanted something very tight like stock and not a lot of slop and I was pleased with my choice. For a daily driven car I wouldnt get larger than a 3600 but for me, closer to 3200.

I have the V2 with 3600 stall... it launches hard and drives well on the street.
If you drive 100% on the street you could probably get away with a lower stall and it would drive a little nicer, but it would kill your 60ft.
On the other hand, it is very streetable with the 3600 and im sure 4000 with some deep gears would do just as well. Mines drives very nice with 3600 and 3.73s but I am swapping to 4.11 as soon as my parts get here.
The only part that sucks is that you lose all your handling when you go to a stall converter. Nothing quite like that feeling when you bomb into a corner and that bastard unlocks and trys to slide you into a ditch.
Edit: Just read that you want to keep 3.42's. Go with a lower stall, the taller gears will make the converter seem looser than it is.
I worked on a car for a guy one time who had a big cam in a big block and stock stall. You literally had to stand on the brake petal to keep it from rolling forward.

i do want something that will still drive great, but why do you recommend 3600 or larger? what would be the big difference between a 3600 and a 3200 as far as driveability? cause this is my daily driver. btw thank you for the responses thus far you have been very helpful

ok im deff gonna have to check that out, now as far as the stall goes should i add on anything else to the tranny? i already have a b&m tranny cooler on there and i realize adding a stall will generate more heat like i said before i really am not going to beat on this car to much maybe just a couple runs here and there on the highway and i dont wanna dish out the money for a different tranny just yet if i can make this 4l60 last with this setup ill be happy

I'm going to go against the grain here. You asked if it was absolutely crucial. The answer is no. I drove my car with a 234/244 cam, stock stall and 2.56 gear for a year before swapping stall and gears. It didn't like to idle in gear that well but it was manageable. Of course the gears and stall really woke it up, but not crucial to driving it and won't hurt a thing
