Default LS1 Low oil pressure. Any more ideas to try before I buy new engine?

Okay I had a thread about my low oil pressure, but I'll make one more before I completely give up on it... I was driving the car a few days ago and sitting at a stop at Idle I look down and I see the car running with about 10lbs of oil pressure. So I drive it 30 mins back home. While sitting in driveway oil pressure fluctuates from 20-10-5 all the way down to zero at times. I was almost sure opsu must be bad so I changed it out, but still have same problem. So than I put a mechanical gauge on it and still the same thing.. After this I go to gm and buy a oil pump and go ahead and put it in. I get the engine back together and STILL low pressure. Is there anything else I can try with the engine in the car? And if not what should I check for when I pull the engine? Or when I pull it should I take it to machine shop and have them look at it? I'm assuming I have to have either a spun bearing or a blocked oil gallery in the block.... Btw the engine has never been abused, never run on low oil, and change oil every 3k miles with mobile 1 synthetic...

Have you cut open the oil filter?

Yes I did. It was silvery, but what I've been told is that's normal...

Silvery is not normal. Is the engine knocking or tapping? How many miles on the engine and any mods?

Try 15/40 oil..that should increase pressure....doesn't by any means fix the problem...but I'd try it just to see..only if you've exhausted all other options.

Bet you the lobes on your cam are excessively worn down.

Only 50k miles... No knocking, but I've been told spun bearing doesn't mean it will knock. Professional engine builder told me 97-00 ls1's had bad oiling issues and they don't even take them as cores because of the bad oiling issues... So I went ahead and bought a forged shortblock from Thompson motorsports for $2400!

I plan to pull it out and start tearing into it and look for a problem first. And if I find spun bearing I'll sell it.

i had this problem was thanks to bent push rods which then wore the lobes on the cam and ate up all my bearings

It could be so many things. Personally I'd tear it down before I bought anything. Could be as simple as a cam bearing that walked.

Thank you for your business, You will have much more fun with the forged motor than the stock when you start pouring the boost to it.

I'm betting the oil pick up tube is clogged with something, let us know what you find so this thread can help everyone out.

Thanks

That doesn't make sense with the problems I'm having though... Not saying it's 100% not that. The screen should catch anything before the tube. Anything small enuf to make it past the screen would make it through the tube into the oil pump

If you had red towel on yours you must have dropped a rag in there or something? I have never left anything in mine. Only been apart once many miles ago. I'll be out of town for atleast a month though so who knows when I'll get a chance to pull this bitch and get my new motor in...

lol I won't go into detail about the red towel incident... but if you use those red shop rags to wipe stuff around lifter bores or near the oil pan area, it will leave microscopic lint particles and once you start your engine it will gather on the pick up screen.. that and if someone used too much RTV to seal the oil pan and any bleeds into the engine it will break off and get clogged in the pick up screen as well... these are 2 instances that I ran into and therefore do not use those cheap red rags anywhere near my engine at all... and RTV I apply very little if any..
