228R cam performance

228R cam performance i am thinking about running a 228R cam in my 05 5.3 its stock motor just carbed with long tubes and sending power through a built 700r with a 3000 stall. wondering what everyones experiences are with the cam and whats the general power made from these upgrades.

Thats good bc i want a good all around cam that is streetable and still got enough in it to do good at the track, its all going to be stuffed into a 89 fox coupe so i am hoping this will be a fun car to drive around and pick on some unsuspecting people lol

I have it on the 112lsa. Its obvious I have a cam in my car unless you don't know anything about cars haha. Its a great cam overall. Good balance over power, lope and driveability. For a street car I personally wouldn't want to go any bigger. Mine has a broad torque curve and has a great peak hp. I have a graph and build thread as well.

i guess the main thing is the heads that all you guys are using are making you hit the magical 400 mark with the cam. so i figure i am going to be a little short on hitting that mark. i would love to be in that 400 horse range but i dont see it happening with just a cam, headers and a carbed intake.

370hp 380tq and i dont have headers,just milled heads and ls6 intake.I think you might just hit 400 on the dot depending on carb and intake..or extremely close.
Its a great cam both street and track..pulls all the way to 6700 on my setup..comes alive at 2400 and the hear the tone start to growl out.

Certainly not on a 5.3L. But it is a pretty nice cam. My only negative comment is about the X-ER lobes. They have really aggressive ramp rates so the valve train is a bit more noisy than some of the more modern lobes. However I have at 12k miles on PRC duals and haven't had any break.
This is the TSP 228r of course. Mines on a 114. Pretty smooth idle. A tad bit of cam surge that I cannot tune out but it's only at REALLY light throttle in 3-5 gear.

I wish I went bigger. The 228R runs like a stock cam compared to what I'm use to with the SBCs. It idles smooth, but doesn't run like a "Cammed" car. I made 454hp to the wheels, but I have a 5.7 and CNC LS6 heads
Valvetrain with this cam on mine is quiet..I couldnt tell you how since I had an race mechanic really pick apart the setup and dial it all in for me.
My experience with sbc seems like over camming a setup was just the norm, ls motors are making good jam even with "baby" cams. I also have slight cam surge but its too small to bother me even as my daily driver.

awesome info guys. yall are just making me all giddy and wanting to spend money that i should be putting back for the remodel on my house haha. i have researched this cam for awhile and was originally looking at the 224 but decided i probably wouldnt be happy with it and want more. i am liking the fact that its powerband is not just in one spot so it will make for a fun driving street car. i am more than ready to make this thing run but i am trying to take my time and get the drivetrain and suspension right the first time. this is my first ls swap so i am learning alot. keep the comments coming bc the more info i get will only help me out when its time to pull the credit card out and order!
In all fairness I don't see much of a difference performance wide for the 224r to the 228r. Times and numbers are in my sig and KNOW there's more in it.
The heads are LE stage one heads milled .030 with stock valves and on .030 cometic gaskets. The 11.38 was on a 26" tire shifting 1-2 and 2-3 at 5500 and hitting the rev limiter about 100 feet before the stripe at 6700 rpm. I went to the dyno day that khaotic put on at his shop and he looked me straight in the face after the first pull and said its easily got another 30 rwhp in it and was impressed by how torquey it felt. I don't think you can go wrong with either cam. Mines on a 112 las by the way.

from what i was told the 228 had about another 15-20 horse in it over the 224 but you are right the 224 is no slouch either, i just sort of talked myself out of it over time and decided to step up to the 228 when it comes time to order. all these cars on here are right in the hp level i want to be in so i am pretty sure i am on the right road to hitting my goal.

That's why I went the way I did. I wouldn't sacrifice much power and be safe on the piston to valve clearence without fly cutting. I was told I'd be safe up to 230* duration and saw no sense in pushing it. That's with the milled heads and thinner gaskets though.
