OK to reuse oil pan gasket on new crate engine?
Service manual specifically states DO NOT REUSE OIL PAN GASKET. However, I'm putting a C5 pan on a new crate engine for a LS1 GTO (swapping heads/cam as well).
Thoughts on reusing the gasket? It's a nice rubber gasket just like the rest of the LSX stuff.

Probably will... don't want a pan leak with the engine in the car.

I'll take the unpopular side and say reuse it if it hasn't been heat cycled. Even if it was compressed, oil pan bolts are only 18ft-lbs. I'm all for being cautious, but if it hasn't been heated up, I would definitely reuse it.
I also must be missing the gravity of the issue, because everyone so far seems to have classified this gasket's failure as an automatic catastrophic engine failure. I immediately think small leak when I think gasket failure on the oil pan, not catastrophic. Am I missing something?
I'd reuse it if it's never been heat cycled.

On a C5 you have to drop the cradle to swap the gasket. I went ahead and bought a new one for $31 at the local dealer. I agree with you that not being heat cycled and just mildly compressed it's probably OK to re-use.

Beings that it came off a new engine I would think its ok...but that far dwn I don't think I'd risk it because even if it has the smallest of leaks when I got it togeather it'd drive me nuts lol but everyone has there own way of sound things.
