Mast LS3 on LS1. Anyone running them?
As the title implies. I was looking to build an LS1 with the Mast small bore LS3 heads. Anyone run or know someone who runs them? I like the idea of these heads because of the obviously better flow potential (ported 5.3's are at their limit that are on it) and the supercharger options (whipper me baby). It SEEMS to be an effective way to get the flow and induction I want without a sheet intake...Christ I don't want to buy another one of those anytime soon...

They look like great heads but for me i don't have the coin for the Masts so i was looking at the Ballistic Speed Small bores for like half the price for my 408. Id be interested in seeing some results for these heads also.

I bet they will turn on like a light at about 4500 rpms probably. Plus if u get em u gotta post some results cause id love to see how they run. I saw a thread the other day that was kinda old of a GTO that put them on and it made like 440rwhp if i recall properly but this guy was in Australia and there dynes reader lower than our from what i understand.

Bang bag my baby shot me down? Lol if you guys could afford anything possible in a dream build, how radical would you go? I'd stick to a 383 w/ Mast LS3 Small Bore heads, whipple 4.5 @ 18-22 lbs and a frutal cam...a big one too...but then again I drove a 69 fastback mustang with a pissed off big block to high school...so...I need those feels. But I'm new to these engines and I'm curious as to what others would build if the world was no issue? Smoke em' if ya got em

Damon at Mast is really great to talk to, and that's the direct quote he told me... "Like a f$&@ing light switch around 4500." That suits me fine, since that's where you "oh **** handle" comes into play on a healthy heads/cam combo. He did say they were more "optimized" for a stroker, but would work great either way.
Now that I have a Vette, I've actually thought of pairing this up with a HeartBeat supercharger from Magnuson

Does anyone think you make compression high enough to make decent low end torque with these? Something greater than 11.5:1? Just thinking maybe that could get you low end drivability with the top end grunt the rectangular ports are known for. Pair it with the right cam may be something Katech torquer like 22X/24X on a 112, allowing for low end as well as top end pull.

I've been examining the Ballistic and Black Mast heads. The difference (and reason for) in the price is due to the mast heads being a dedicated casting, clean sheet design. The ballistic's are just machined and ported LS3 cores...talked with mast about my basic plans. Depending on how radical I go with boost (i.e. If I need a 6 bolt block) I can squeeze another 100-130 horses over a similarly built cathedral headed engine...I'm sold...

I run the BSP as cast on my c5 ls1. It runs decent. Traps 120 consistently in ~500-1000 DA through LS7 manifolds and a lower compression forged 347. If I added headers, it would probably trap 122-123, so pretty much like any other h/c/i c5. But you are out a lot less money because the LS3 = A FAST and comes with injectors already.
I look at it as a great, complete, budget option. It's not the best for a max effort setup though, but for the overall price of everything, it can't really be beat.

It took me 3 tries and going to a custom cam guy (Ed Curtis) to get it right. It ran like **** with a 231/239 cam. Talk about zero anything under 5k.
Now it has a 219/231 111 lsa cam. It's still a bit lazy below 3k, but I don't really care and that could be a result of having no headers.

Interesting. With more bore the heads do fine with torque it seems. But even with a smaller intake valve they still seem like too much for a 3.9" bore. The 2.08" valve probably would work very well on a 4" bore and the stock valves on the 4.065"+ bores.
Thing is, the LS3 with it's huge runners are not flowing a whole heck of a lot more than 215-225cc cathedral port heads. Maybe after .600" they are, but in the .200-.500 it seems pretty close. The CSA is a bit different because of the port design, but flow numbers are only part of the story.
Like I said, I would have investigated the smaller port LS3s. As I actually did look at the MAST offering, but was put off by the price. But, I'm glad I went with what I went with and would stick to cathedral port up to a 427. After that, I'd swap over to LS7 heads. LS7 heads are beast.

Yes, I still say the ported cathedral stuff works best on the stock 346 cube motors, but you're going to end up spending $800+ more when you factor in the injectors and cost of a FAST.
I got my ls3 intake, injectors, and rails for $350. This motor is getting boost, so I was ok with keeping the compression low with the 70cc heads. I did mill them and put a .040" cometic on, but I am still only at 10.1:1 with the -3.2cc pistons and the fact that they are zero deck.
I had an AI 243 226cc heads + fast combo before this one and it was awesome. I popped #7 at the track though , which led me down this path. I just like trying new things sometimes and my car needed heads after I sold my old mods, so I figured what the hell. There's also the added benefit of everything being brand spankin new, not just rebuilt.
I kind of regret not just putting a forged 416 in with ls7 small bore heads though
But I am sure the regrets will change when the blower goes on
