Default Is it common for these motors to consume oil through the PCV?

i am just wondering because i changed my knock sensors and my engine had about 40 miles on it when i went to change then and there was already a light film of oil in all the intake runners of the heads, i used the stock 190,000 mile pcv valve and replace it when i seen all of that.

So common, that just a few days ago my son addressed that very issue. There is a new tray that fits under the intake that holds the knock sensors with a large re-designed baffled port. There is also a new style valve cover with a greatly improved baffle to prevent this. This seems to have been an issue with this motor from the git go. No wonder there are so many catch cans on street cars with LSx engines. Now you know why...

Switching to a LS6 valley cover isn't a guaranteed fix, I'd get a good CC first !

Research catch cans. Type it in the search bar. Very common and tons of info. Look up Mighty Mouse catch cans. Seems to be popular. Mine I run 2 lines of the valve cover to a vented catch can. No PCV several ways to do it.

if i did run a catch can, would i still have to use some kind of pcv because of my cam? and not route it to intake and just block the intake port off so it will vent through catch can then into air or should it go back into intake and potentially burn the remaining?

There is a norris catch can in the classifieds right now. And yes, you want to run a check valve for a non vented catch can.

1. Get a vented catch can
2. Buy an LS6 valley cover.
3. Tie both valve covers to the catch can
4. Run a hose from the side of the intake to the port of the valley cover

Enjoy

The fresh air hose routing stays OEM. The catch can goes in the dirty pcv hose. The instructions omit the pcv y-connection, but leave the y-connection hooked up to both valve covers. An LS6 valley pan won't help much, as my 2001 ZO6 had it as oem, and I still get oil in the catch can.

Agreed with above, coming from stock though the LS6 valley has made a difference for me, however, it doesn't take long for a brand new intake to get an oil film inside it regardless. You still lose the oil with a catch can it just doesn't go into the intake. So the real question is, is the oil film inside the intake really hurting anything? Probably not, hence the reason I've never added a can.

Keeping the intake side of the heads clean is always a plus. You get less buildup on the intake and exhaust valves if you aren't buring small amounts of oil.

I didn't have a catch can with my previous N/A setup but will be adding one after the cleaning I had to do to my FAST 102 and cnc'd heads.

Pulled apart a stock 100k LS1 and there wasn't enough oil to cause harm and the backsides of the valves were fine. Maybe some engines that aren't maintained are worse but then that's an entirely different issue: proper maintenance.
