Default Metal in oil pickup...HELP (Thrust pics added)

Hey guys, I've got about 500 miles on my 6.0 rebuild, pulled the pan and found a bunch of little pieces of copper and what looks like steel wool on the oil pickup screen. Everything was new in the rebuild...all forged internals, all high-end stuff, ARP everywhere, etc. Engine runs great, no knocks or noises... What could this be? Cam bearing? It is a twin-turbo motor..but I don't think turbos have any copper in them..

I would think bearings with the copper, most likely cam bearings..those are pretty big pieces too...how is your oil pressure?

Oil pressure was low. I called the machine shop and they told me they left the mains a little loose due to my high hp goals, but who knows if thats true. I ran brad penn 20-50 for the first 500 miles. Why, will a bad cam bearing affect oil pressure?

low/loss of oil pressure is a symptom, but you will probably have to pull the cam to find out...did they also install the cam/do the entire build? Just wondering if a bearing was knicked/damaged during installation..The cam is the 1st place oiled...

FWIW...that loose bearing/motor business sounds like bullshit to me, but I am NO engine builder. I know one thing though. I would not be comfortable finding that much trash in my pan...hopefully someone else will chime in

Yeah I thought it sounded like a BS excuse. They did the machining, cam bearings and installed the crank. I did the rest. I'll pull the cam and see what the bearings look like.

Ok, cam bearings actually look pretty good. From what I can see, none appear to have walked fwd or back. Oil holes still look lined up. Cam looks fine.

Is the "steel wool" magnetic? If not, someone may have left a piece of Scotchbrite in there...
Can't see really well, but the metal pieces look like a clamp off of a valve seal. Y/N??
Have you cut the filter open?
For 500 mi, that engine looks to be really dirty.

looks to me like machining junk leftover that wasn't properly cleaned out from the oil passages, etc.

if all the passages aren't opened and cleaned fully, there are lots of places for crap to accumulate.

good luck with the engine. hopefully the bottom end is OK.

Valve seals are all new, but I'll check. I hate to pull the rods & crank, but I guess I may have to. Could a crank/thrust bearing be bad even though it spins freely and makes no noises?

Short answer, yes, and the thrust bearing is very possible.

[edit] but then again it does look alot like trash that was left in after machining.

If I remove the main caps to check the bearings, any idea how to torque the ARP studs back down? I had the shop install studs, and they torqued the main caps.

You can check the thrust with a dial indicator and a screw driver.

No reason to pull the engine apart.

Ok, this is what I got. From what I read, 6.0 LQ4 crankshaft end play should be 0.0015 - 0.0078.

so you have ~0.050" of end play in the crank?

Looks like... How could that happen on a brand new build? Guess I'm f##ed.

Balloon the converter. Too much pressure in the trans. Oiling issues will kill the thrust also.

Trans actually had a low line pressure issue. Could never get enough pressure to lock the converter. So thats getting rebuilt too. I just need to figure out whether to blame the machine shop or not. I did have low oil pressure and checked all the usual stuff. All galley plugs in, oil pump ring was in correctly, etc..
