Default HELP!!! WTF now.....

Ok, just did a massive rebuild of my car....Engine, Transmission and rear.

Take it out for a test drive and now hear this.... During the several times I've idle it in the garage never heard this.

Engine build:

6liter, 4.005" bore, -5cc Flat Top forged pistons, Forged I beam rods, stock crank, Clevite bearings, ARP studs & bolts, Polluter stg3 cam, stock 243 heads (no milling, minor port job), BTR lifters & dual valve springs, Trunion upgrade for rockers, Chrome Moly Push Rods (*7.325"), Melling 10296 oil pump, LS2 Timing chain dampner, LS2 timing chain.

* - this is what was measured for.

I hear it mostly on the drivers side around #1 & 3 cylinder. I've pulled the valve covers off and still see nothing that pops out, also rechecked that all rockers were at 22ft lbs of torque. No play or slap between push rods and rockers. I've even drained some oil to see look for any metal flakes. Clean.

Did you measure pushrod length? 7.325 seems short.

I have never used anything but the 7.400. If they were too short wouldn't it make the same noise on the other side too? Which push-rod tool did you use?

The "base length" was when I measured. I called Manton, and the tech guy said that I could use the stock length, or shorten up to 7.385.
What I did.

Sounds to me as tho you did not add the desired preload...

When I talked with BTR prior to assembly and he told me the preload on those lifters are .025". Now I'm reading I should have gone with .075" which puts me back at 7.4". This crap can make you crazy....

Also I saw today he no longer sells them. So now what???

Have you taken off the valve covers yet to look? Did you modify those also for the Trunion upgrade?

The valve covers in stock form dont sit on there right as you have to remove the dividers. They will hit the trunions as they are wider then stock ls rockers.

Pull the cover and run to see if noise is there or not.

Dont have pics, I used LS3 heads so my rockers had offsets so I removed everything out of mine.

I take it you have yet to pull the valve cover and check if noise is there? Might not even be a valve cover problem. Its the first thing to try and if its the valve cover find out what valve is hitting where and modify it so it doesn't hit.

Winner!!!

I talked with Brian form BTR and he gave me instructions on how to zero in on it. #3 cyl was making all the noise. Pulled the head and one of the lifters plunger would not move at all. He sent replacements + gasket (which arrived today).

I did so while zeroing in on the lifter and yes they did. So I ordered new Compcam 7.4" CM push rods. Hopefully Fedex delivers them tomorrow.

Got the stuff, Fedex screwed me and I'll have to wait till Tue to get my push rods. Got the head back on tonight. Will finish tomorrow and test it with stock push rods. I just hate repeating work....

If you have a lifter problem you should have one push rod that feels loose. In other words if the lifter is collapsed then the plunger has fell down into the lifter causing lash between the push rod and rocker arm.

Alot of times you can take your rockers off, push rods out and you can look down through the push rod passage and see the top of the lifter. If the lifter is collapsed you will see that the plunger (where the push rod sits) will be further down into the lifter than the rest of them.
