Default LS Starter question

I have a 6.0 motor I am putting in my 96 SS and I do not have a starter. What is the best starter to buy considering the size/ weight, price and performance? Do ls2 and 3s fit or are they any different?

Also, I have my old lt1 starter. I did a few searches on it and some say it will work and others say it will not.

Thanks!

It depends on what bell housing you have. IIRC, the GTO bell housing is different and only allows GTO starters to fit due to the nose cone of the starter.

That said, an aftermarket starter without a nose cone will fit just fine. I'm using THIS one and haven't had any issues at all.

Go with the later model trucks, LS2, or LS3 (need to splice the wiring from what I understand) to get the updated braketry so the starter doesn't break off and take a piece of block with it.

I bought an 04 Tahoe starter for a 5.3 and it's actually smaller with a factory gear reduction. Much better starter than the factory 02 f body starter.

Sorry, I thought I sucribed to the thread.

Its a 4L80e bellhousing.

As far as the splicing goes I am having a bp automotive harness made for me and I could probably get it made for whatever starter i think?

This is the answer right here. I bought a car shop starter because it was cheap, and when it crapped out I stole the starter off my dad's 06 5.3 silverado to make sure it was a starter. It's light, small, and does the job every time.

You can get them at a auto parts store for under $200, or go to the dealer and pay over $500
