Default LQ4 Build ideas and opinions

Ok i swapped an lq4 into my car a few years back and all i did was stick a 862 head on it because i had them laying around and i was on a tight budget and it was my DD so i had to get it running quick.

I am now looking at build ideas with my LQ4. I still have the factory 317's but i am looking into selling them and going for some L92 heads the more i look the more i am liking them. Also a buddy of mine told me he has a friend giving away a late model LS6 cam. With custom tune and looking at going with 7.73 or 4.10 gears behind my M6.

Do yall think this would be a good setup? and what est hp could i be looking at?

But like i said looking for options so if you have ideas please share.

Unless you are stroking out for cubes, I recommend cathedral ports. If you want more compression, mill the 317s.

On the cam, for the work involved, you might want to consider buying a better cam. Cams are like breast implants. The most frequent complaint is you didn't go big enough. The ls6 cam is a decent upgrade over ls1, but there are so many cams that are better and still daily drive quite well.

A LS6 cam with L92 heads is a no-go for sure. The LS6 cam will be fine for the cathedral port heads, but like the above posted said, why waste your time. Might as well get something worth putting in there. Plenty of shelf cams that will go great with cathedral port heads. If you go the L92 head route, make sure the cam is spec'd for the square port heads.

thanks guys!! dont even know if ill get the ls6 cam just told my buddy i would take it since it was FREE if nothing else ill sell it and get some funds off of it for another cam. Now there may be some possable 408 plans in the feature but that may be a few years due to lack of funding.

I'd stick with the 862 heads for the stock bottom end LQ4. Going with larger chambers, like in the 317 or L92 heads will be a serious hit to your compression ratio.

If you want more power, have the 862 heads machined for larger valves, like 2.00"/1.55" stock valves for example. Open up the throats to 90% of the valve OD and blend it all in. You will see 90% of the gains of a ported head for about 1/3 of the price.

OP, I'm running ported and polished 862's on a LQ9. Very easy to get good compression and once you do they work very nice for the money

Great advice right here! To be honest I think too many people get caught up in all the internet builds and try to build things they can't afford so the car sits and it sits and it sits some more. If it means running an ls6 cam because your on a tight budget I would run it. If GM made 405hp with it and had factory emissions and a conservative tune, why couldn't you make more with more cubes and less restrictions? If you focused on reworking what you have now to increase flow and compression and ran the ls6 cam there is no reason why you couldn't make 450 to 475 flywheel hp for next to nothing money when your getting some parts for free. Your top end would be very cheap and simple and not to mention reliable with little maintenance.
