Default Valves push open when lashing rocker arms?

I was verifying how many turns from zero lash and noticed something I wasn't expecting.

Once at zero lash, when I tighten the rocker arm bolt - the valve is being pushed open...then over the next 10 - 15 seconds the valve spring slowly overcomes the lifter and pushes the valve closed.

What the hell? Is this normal? I repeatedly checked and when I break the rocker loose the valve is definitely in the seated position, but when I tighten the rocker back down the valve spring "gives" before the lifter.

LS7 lifters, OEM rockers, PAC double springs with 6K miles on them and no signs of valve float. Over 200psi compression on a cold motor with a leaky compression tester.

Why was it apart?
Is it a stock cam? Seems unlikely with dual springs. Seems a bit puzzling that you would list those other details without mentioning the cam too.

Sounds like too long pushrods.

Normal.....they are hydraulic lifters. I'm not going to get into the operation but that's what makes a hyd lifter quiet. If they bleed off too fast they will be noisy when running.

Car isn't making the power it should so I'm just exploring. Aftermarket cam, aftermarket everything but the block, stroker motor.

From zero lash it's 1.25 - 1.5 turns to seat the rocker...then a little more to hit 22ft.lbs....should be about right.

I know how they work...just wasn't expecting them to seal up so well and overpower the valve springs with zero oil pressure.

Shouldn't you be measuring lash on the base circle, not on the lobe...?

Did you remember to install the rocker stand...?

Yes, it's on the base circle based on IC/EO, and yes the rocker stands are in place.

Either you aren't on the base circle of the cam, your pushrods are way too long, or your valve springs are completely shot.

Springs have very low mileage and I'm not getting any valve float all the way to the limiter.

My initial thought was the pushrods must be too long, but they seem to be in the range (from zero lash 1.25 - 1.5 turns to seat the rocker in the rocker stand).

Yep, normal. As long as they seat you are fine and based on the number of turns shouldn't be an issue.

Who said we/I don't believe you

I've never noticed it on past builds and it caught my eye...but since it's holding over 200psi cranking compression and no air leak noises I'm inclined to think you are correct.
