Default LS1 to LS2?

Ok guys needs some input. I have a 2000 Formula M6 with 65K original miles. I have come across a freshly rebuilt LS2 short block for a good deal from one of my friends. It's already got a 24 tooth reluctor, and I already have some heads and a Cam that was going to go into the LS1, that I can slap on the short block, and pretty much just pull the Ls1 out and drop the LS2 in. My question is, what would it really be worth it? Pros/Cons? Eventually I'm probably going to spray the car. The car is also just going to be. Drag/ toy car. Figure if I did I could sell the Ls1 and make some money and not really be out anything.

I am doing this exact thing right now. My ls1 is much higher mileage and the ls2 is lower is a big reason I'm doing it, but the extra cubes and slightly better internals than my 98 ls1 shortblock are a plus. Also much more room to grow with 402/408 internals later as well as possibility for l92/ls3 heads without the added weight of a 6.0l iron block

Things you will need:

knock sensor extension harness ($20)
cam sensor relocation harness ($20)
gen iv style valley cover ($60 used, $115 new)
gen iv front cover (has cam sensor provision) ($30 used, unknown new)
gen iv cam sensor (~$30 new)
ls2 timing chain dampener (~$18 new)
ls2 24x timing cam gear (got mine free)

new crank bolt
new head bolts (04+ style)
new head gaskets
new water pump gaskets
fluids

My buddy already has all the stuff required for the swap besides the harnesses. He is including it all in the price he is selling it to me for.

I will certainly be able to come back with results in a couple weeks.

Cam will be nearly the same (same duration and LSA but 1* more advance and some more intake lift) and I'm reusing my heads (but with a valve job and a little more porting).

Why would any true gear head want to add seven tenths of a point of compression as well as eighteen cubic inches ??? Seems crazy right ??
Definite plus !!!!!

You'll need to drill and tap the side of the block for the LS1 knock sensors.

Oh ok. Mainly just wondering if it's worth the hassle of pulling the old one out and dropping this in.

Also I had planned on going with a 92/92 set up, but was wondering if going with a 102/102 setup would be worth it over the 92 setup? I have been told by a couple people that the 102 throttle body is no good so that is kind of making me shy away from it.

If you weren't already getting ready to do heads and cam I would say no, but since a lot of the same work will need to be done and you are getting the engine and all the parts for about the same price..."might as well" is what I say.

Well I found a I good deal on a fast 92 intake, mainly just wondering if the extra cost from the 102 is worth it power wise over a 92 setup.

If you found a good deal on the Fast 92 then it's worth it IMO! I recently bought a Fast 90 with TB, injectors, and fuel rails all for $600. I'll turn around and sell the fuel rails and injectors, along withn my LS6 intake and TB, and probably make a few bucks actually.

I say yes. I have a 102 and no complaints. Anyone who said a 102 tb doesnt drive as good as a 92 doesnt have a good tune. My 102 NW drives better than the 92 tb I had before. Typically a fast 102 will make 10hp more than a 92 either ported or unported, the downside is the extra bits needed cost about 150 more in the end. However 150 for 10hp is hard to beat. If you go with a 102 get a 102 tb either PTM or NW I had a 92 to start with on my 102 intke and picked up 7hp going to a 102 nw with no other changes.

Well I had planned on going with a 93 set up on the LS1, but now it looks like the LS2 is worth the extra work I was thinking the 102 would be better with the LS2, and maybe carry power a little longer?

Just give us a yell! We can help you with all the little parts you'll be needing. We stock all the components to do the conversion. You've got all the big $$ stuff lined out, just need a few adapters etc to put it all together. We also have gaskets, bolts etc for you to put that thing together!!

Not necessarily for you but more so for anyone doing something like this. If you get an ls2 and use the ls2 heads. You can indeed use all your ls1 intake, fuel rail and injector pieces. The ls2 intake really sucks so if you have an ls6 setup you're already ahead of the game. That eliminates a good chunk of money being spent. The water pump can also be reused unless you have a problem clearancing the ls1 one for some tb setups. Also the only year ls2 I have seen that has a 58x is an 07 05-06 all have 24x from what I see. This would also eliminate the need for a new crank sensor. If you are looking at an ls2 to buy the crank sensor is a dead give away. 05-06 come with the black 24x sensor and late 06 to 07 come with a gray one signifying 58x

I realize that you are doing a swap and replacing a lot of parts. However for anyone else if you need to swap in an ls2 into your fbody. You need the extension harnesses and POSSIBLY the 58x converison box. Other than that e.verything should bolt to the ls2 motor just like the ls1

yeah your right bro, you cleared alot more information on the LS2 swap & savings wise as well, I just wanted to only upgrade but prices were a bit too high. Im now considering ls6 intake 243s to reuse some of my Ls1 parts & just get the car going my Ls2 came off a 07 vette.
