Default Normal Cam cover wear?

Noticed alum in my oil filter when I cut it open. Upon tear down I don't see any abnormal bearing wear. I am seeing alot of wear on the cam cover.

Is this "normal"? Seems a little excessive, no?

It machined itself nicely. So the gear was hitting it?

Someone brought up on YB that the cam bolt pattern is too wide to leave that marking... So I don't know where the heck it came from. Wasn't there when I installed the new cover. Also not the first cover I've seen do that. It's a mystery! Nothing else rotates in that area so it has to be cam related IMO.

Are you sure that wasn't there? The bolts wouldn't machine out a perfect circle like that...they aren't close enough to each other. Looks like a machined recess for the bolt heads to me but not gonna lie I'm sick and have been taking some meds lol...

The bolt heads would have to be touching. I could see if it were a circular line groove, but a full recessed circle? How?

google images shows several like that:

That's done with an end mill.

If it were the bolts it would be a ~10mm thick ring.
