Default head bolt pop help!

just how it says, i was putting back my heads onto my ls1 block and as i was putting the first bolt back in not even half way, suddenly a pop noise, took the bolt off, take the head off to check and i find a little chip off the block, my guess is that there was water in the cylinder bolt hole, im guessing bolt sealed up as i was torquing down the bolt created pressure and the block gave out, i will attach some pictures of what im talking about, i inserted a copper wire so you can see were the piece came out of. Now my question is has this happened to anybody else and have they been able to use the block again and did it run fine?? would be a good idea to weld that hole back up assemble everything back up??? What are your thoughts???

You really need to inspect the block good for cracks. You may have dodged a bullet but when this is done the block is typically cracked and unusable.

I would junk the block personally, however, I have seen a couple guys on here who have said they did the same thing and ran it anyways.

I did that to mine, I put some thread sealent on the bolt and tightened her down. Ran it 2 years at 600hp and never had a problem. Guy I sold it too is still running it as far as I know.

I'm curious as to why a block is considered "junk" when a headbolt pops internally, but it's OK to run when one pops externally? As far as I see it, doping the new bolt will work no matter which bolt hole is now "bottomless"...

I consider the block's strength compromised.

Paul, you're a pretty sharp guy. I'm just not seeing what difference one headbolt breach makes over another. There are ten 11mm bolts, are you saying these ten holes have varying degrees of clamping strength? That the holes on the inside of the block are somehow more critical than those to the outside?

You might be able to get away using this block. I wouldn't attempt it. If you're building an engine, get it right the first time.
