Default Very low oil pressure.

I just picked up an 00 WS6 trans am and it's having an oil pressure issue. Has an iron block motor in it, was told that it was an LQ4, but it has 853 heads on it, so no idea. The oil pressure gauge was reading about 10PSI cold and not moving with the engine speed, 0 PSI hot and check gauges.

No engine noise of any kind, so I figured it was probably a bad sender, went Roadkill and drove the bitch 170 miles home. Cruised about 80MPH the whole way home, oil pressure stayed around 10PSI. I also idled for at least 5 minutes with all the stop lights.

Hooked up a mechanical gauge today and it's showing 10PSI cold idle.... HMMM well that aint good.

The pickup tube O ring and barbell are on my hit list, but is there anything on the LQ4 that might stop oil from getting up to the intake? Just don't see going that damned far and not damaging the bearings. First thing tomorrow is hacking the oil filter open to see if there is metal, but I am not seeing anything on the dipstick.

Does it move with rpm with the mechanical gauge?

Not really, maybe a few PSI.

Cracked open the oil filter and nothing. No metal to speak of, so I highly doubt that a bearing is acting up. Also changed the filter just to rule it out, no change. Someone probably pinched the pickup tube O ring when they changed the pan over.

Bunch of copper in the oil pan after I drained it. Probably a spun cam bearing.

Yeah. Most of the literal "pressure" is developed at the restrictions or passages like the crankshaft or the camshaft. Whichever it sees first. (Usually crank shaft passages and galleys)

If you're seeing metal in the oil pan then it sounds like you know what to do. Unless you want to try and see how long it will last with a new pump. Pick up a nice Melling piece for a good price now days if that's what you're leaning toward.

Not going to risk it, I plan on keeping this car and the transmission/intake is already out, so I am more than halfway to pulling the engine. The only decision is if I want to go to a 5.3L or rebuild the LQ4.

Good deal. Get the LQ mic'd up to see if it's worth saving.

Number 4 cam bearing took a stroll out of it's bore and was resting comfortably on the camshaft. Had to use tin snips through the top of the valley to hack the bearing out because I couldn't get the cam out.

Well there's your internal leak.

I'd suggest getting the car back to an aluminum block if bank allows for it.

I would like to, but the aluminum block engines are insanely priced around here. I can nearly get a running car for the price of an LS1, and the L33 is more expensive than the LS1's. Probably going to wind up with a cammed LM7.
