Default Cam Only Choice

Gang, I'm looking for schools of thought for a cam only choice for a 2001 corvette 6M with long tubes and a cold air. I have a completely stock engine with an LS6 intake and 241 heads (value spring will be upgraded). I'm looking for primarily daily driving characteristics - good low-end torque and peak HP not much past 6,000 rpm. I've been doing lots of research and plenty of people like the Texas Speed 224R and 228R. They seem to make power with less duration and more lift (224-228/.600) compared to say Comp Cams, Crane, Lunati that use much more duration (say 254 to 272) and less lift (515 to 550), and more lobe separation and all of the cams in this group also have a split pattern. All of these cams advertise a power band from say 1,200+/- RPM to 6,100+/- RPM. So my question is - is one profile type better for stock heads than the other? Thanks!

There are plenty of good cams out there. I have heard raving reviews from people who have used the Streetsweeper HT (High Torque). Supposedly it is a torque beast, has good driving characteristics, and doesn't murder your valvetrain.

I would look at something like the tried and true Ed Curtis special - Streetsweeper HT. That cam has been putting bus lengths on over cammed cars since you were probably in diapers.

Indeed! other similar cams - Brian Tooley stage 2, Tick SNS 2, Titan 4. EPS probably makes something in this range like a 226/230. Martin Smallwood probably has a new off the shelf grind in that range also, and he's always got something up his sleeve

All very good blends of high and midrange power

with a cam you are always better to undercam a little than overcam.

I've been guilty of putting too big of a cam in myself in the past. Most of the suggestions above are making peak power a little higher in the powerband than I'm looking for. Still looking for thoughts/experiences on the "more duration" or "more lift" schools of thought for stock heads and an otherwise stock motor. It's incredible how such different profiles describe such similar powerband ranges by their respective manufactures. I'm thinking one is more appropriate than the other for my application...or maybe not.

Both more duration and lift will help with increasing power and power range. In all honesty your best option is to talk to some of the cam gurus on here and see what they have to say. That is just my two cents.

OP,

Id suggest no smaller than the TSP 228r cam. If you wanted to go slightly bugger, id suggest the torquer 2 232/234 or speed inc SI5 231/237.

+1 for the Streetsweeper HT. I have it in my car and absolutely love it, it drives great, makes great power, and was cake to tune.

I am not sure why nobody ever mentions this cam. It is a great street cam in my 68 Camaro with mildly modified heads.

It's because people always want to use whatever is the most popular at the time or want a massive cam in their daily driver that needs to be pulled to 7k and are only worried about peak dyno numbers.

the Streetsweeper HT would be an excellent choice.i would've used that one for mine, but I already had one of Ed's baby cams sitting around from an uncompleted project that I used instead(see my sig).don't let the small size fool you,it puts out just as much,if not more, power than most other 224 cams out there.
awesome customer service after the sell is another bonus you get with Ed.

my wimpy ls6 cam has peak hp at 5750 rpm. I find it hard to believe the 228 cam doesn't peak above 6k rpm which is not what the op asked for. I don't know anything about the sweeper cam but I think you'd be happy with a 224. just my one cent.
