Default First build - How will this parts list work?

Well, the time has come for my LS1 to go under the knife. I'm letting a machine shop do most of the work since I really don't have the know-how or the place to do it. They'll do a stock bottom end while I supply whatever else I want added. I've been doing a good bit of reading here but I figured I'd ask the pros. I'm not looking for a 10 second car here, just something to make for a fun car and take to the track sometimes. This is all going in a 99 Camaro, automatic with a 3600 stall and 3.73 gears.

So far my plans are:

PRC 225 As-Cast heads w/ .650" lift dual valvesprings
TSP 228/232 .600"/.600" 112 LSA cam
LS2 Timing chain
LS7 Lifters
BTR Trunion upgrade
FAST 92 intake
Bosch 36lb injectors
TSP 1 7/8 headers
LS6 valley cover

I'm still undecided on oil pump or a fuel pump. I'm open to any recommendations or changes here. Thanks for the help

Your list looks good.

Did you talk to someone and have them spec the cam for your combination? I have always recommended Martin Smallwood for any and all things camshaft related, but there are plenty of others. As for fuel pump(s), I would stab a 340 or 450 in there right off the go. That way it will support some boost if you ever choose to go that route. I like high volume oil pumps, personally, but any of the blueprinted/shimmed LS6 oil pumps out there would be fine, I'm sure. Make sure you measure for correct pushrods, and get the best ones you can afford. And also, make sure you measure the relation of the piston to the deck at top dead center and choose the correct thickness of head gasket to give you optimum quench.

Thanks! That's just what was recommended to me by TSP.

I was just thinking of the Racetronix 255. Neither of those are just drop in pumps, are they?

Still debating the ported LS6 or a Melling pump of some kind. Maybe even just a plain jane LS6. Get a nice little discount on parts since I work for a GM dealer.

I'd probably just let the shop handle that bit of it.

I would use a better lifter. Something like a Morel drop in. Mill heads to get somewhere around 11:0.1 compression and 11/32 pushrods. As DavidBoren said have someone like Geoff Skinner at EPS or Martin Smallwood spec a cam for you. I used a Racetronix 255 pump with their hotwire kit.

You can request quench to be in the .034-.039 range, and any shop worth its salt should be able to achieve that for you. It is literally as easy as measuring the piston at top dead center and ordering the correct thickness of head gasket to give you the desired squish. If a shop cannot figure that out, then you need to choose a better shop.

I also second the notion to use better lifters if you can at all afford it. I didn't bring it up earlier because LS7 lifters are a standard and proven budget build "upgrade", but just about any of the aftermarket lifters will be better. The valvetrain is not the area of a build to try save money. Things like heavy duty pushrods, good lifters, and good springs will always pay for themselves in the end.

While I'd really like to keep it as cheap as possible I'd rather do it right the first time. Would the Morel 5315s be a better choice?

I agree. The LS7 lifters aren't the best and I wouldn't use them on any high power boosted builds, but they'll work fine for most typical H/C NA set ups. You just have to make sure your pre load and lash is all seen to properly, and that you have the correct length push rods.

FWIW, you could manage mid to low 11's with a well done bolt on build.

Seems like every thread about lifters always ends up in a debate about whether or not LS7s are good enough
