Default 800 miles, Valve Spring broken = engine toast

So my 2000 SS has been a project since the day I bought it and it keeps adding to the "fun" of this hobby. Since I bought it, I put a shortblock in it, updated the intake, stall, rebuilt the trans(x2), and did a lot of tuning on it. The car was just starting to run right at the beginning of this season, ran 11.7x at Milan while the trans was shifting from 1->3(reason for 2nd rebuild). I just got the trans back in perfect working form and noticed the car started pushing oil out of the exhaust and developed a top end tap. I finally got around to tearing into it(engine still had good oil pressure) and this is what I found:

Found this in the intake:

#8 spark plug looked like this:

Broken valve spring(800 miles and 10 track passes old)

30K mile bottom end toast(engine still ran when I pulled the car in the garage to tear into it)

Head is probably salvageable:

I plan on contacting the spring manufacturer and letting them know of this failure/ see if they are willing to work with me on sourcing parts to get this thing running again. These springs were rated to .675 lift and my cam is in the lower .600's so I was nowhere near the rated limits of these springs.

Dam, that sucks man I feel your pain. Had a s10 with a built lq9 in it, went through three transmissions and was on my third motor when it finally got going. Good luck on your rebuild.

Hate to break the news to you but they aren't likely to give you anything but maybe a replacement spring, That is all the warranty usually covers.

Looks like the valve stem broke in half and that caused all the damage.

Looks like PEP junk Chinese springs, they're notorious for breaking. Amazes me that they still sell them and people still buy them.

These springs were bought here on LS1tech from a sponsor, they were sold as their own brand spring.

Well it would be good to know what sponsor. But if your waiting for them to get back with you first i understand. also how long did you drive with a crack spring? that's what prob caused the valve to break.

The most common cause of fracture - especially multiple fractures - is coil contact. What was your installed height? If you didn't use a micrometer, that could be the problem.

Sorry for your mess, but it would help the thread a lot if you told everyone what brand springs they were and what "sponsor" you purchased them from. I'd also like to know what brand heads they are.

Stock 243's. I'd like to give the manufacturer a chance to respond and do the right thing, which in my mind is at least getting the money back for the spring kit. The spring kit is no longer for sale but it was part of a group purchase. If I don't hear anything from the manufacturer by tomorrow PM I will post up what brand and sponsor sold them to me. Feel free to PM me if interested and I will let you know privately what kit it was.

I already know who they are, all I have to say is, I went your route, nothing was solved, so I just talk **** to him/them whenever I see them on here. Good luck brother, who knows, maybe they've changed and they'll help you out. A lot of us have been screwed over by them, some were helped and some were just told to **** off, it's basically a chance thing.

In for who the Sponsor is and if they make it right. I recently went the BTR platinum route as well and have been happy so far.

Spoke with customer service at the spring sponsor today. Based on info I've received in PM's and the few people that chimed in here, it seems that these springs were simply re-badged PEP ebay springs, which is really disappointing. The sponsor said they'd work with giving me a deal on another set of springs, but, I don't plan on spending any more money with them. Feel free to PM me for info on who it was.

Also, shoutout to @Jason 98 TA for reaching out to me to help source parts. I will ultimately be taking my business to TSP once I get the rest of the drivetrain out of the car and figure out what route I want to go for a rebuild.

Does it start with a C? Second word starts with a S? Is the puzzle "people who annoy you"?
