Default Cam Install on LS6

I want to install a new cam on a 2003 Corvette Z06. I read a how-to and it look like I would not have a problem. A friend of mine said that I could not do it myself because I would have to degree the cam and have it dailed in.

Is this info true, and if so, how hard is it to dail in a cam?

Thanks

D.

You'll need a couple of special tools like a dial indicator. You'll also need an adjustable timing chain set. But it isn't very hard. Actually you don't *have* to degree the cam.

It sounds like your friend doesn't want you to make your car any faster.

its easy. You can pretty much get away with not degreeing in the cam.....matter of fact most people don't. At least the do it yourselfers. I have been degreeing in my cams since I started getting into the nasty, large lift/duration, low lsa cams that require fly cutting. At that point it is imperative! otherwise the install is a snap

I did my cam at home. Just lined up the dots. Been running great ever since. Be prepared to yank a LOT of crap to get it out though.

PEOPLE, why would you spend $1000's to get every last HP out of your car and then in the 11th hour skimp on 1 minor installation precausion(degreeing) that could rob of HP if it is slightly off by just a degree. Some people just don't get it . And I guess that is the difference between installers vs. professional engine builders .Yes, most do get away with "shade tree machanic" type dot to dot cam install, but will never know how much HP they left on the table by it be off, if it was .

Also, be careful, just cause you take your LS1 to a good speed shop doesn't mean they always degree a cam in.....I had to pay $50 extra to my cam install for this. You will also need an adj. timing chain otherwise there will be no way to make the slight corrections with the factory chain.

On a second note, comp cams seems to line up dot to dot more accurately than Lunaty(sp?).

I used an SBC offset cam bushing in my stock cam gear to get mine degree'd in. But an adjustable timing chain would have been easier had I not wanted to pull the pan and oil pump to install a new timing set. Only cost $4 for the bushing.

Not at all....if that is what your setup calls for. Most have the +4 ground in the cam, 2 diff. ways to get to the same end result!

I definitely agree with that statement. But I was questioning the "loss" of hp statement you made earlier.

The power isn't lost, it's just in the wrong place (rpm).

just like someone said earlier, you dont really have to with a non agressive cam, but if your gonna go with a big cam, then i would definatly reccommend it. by the way, what cam are you installin?!?

I am going with the MTI X1 cam.

X1-specs.

230/227 .591/.791 112

It sounds like it will make good power but still be streetable.
